Toilet in Old House Renovation Can Be Moved

Admin October 05, 2026

The position of the toilet in an old house renovation can be moved, but it requires careful operation, meeting certain conditions, and following standardized procedures.

Randomly moving the toilet, 90% of the problems stem from the inherent limitations of the old house's sewage system and the insufficient professionalism of the construction team. The sewage pipes in old houses are mostly made of cast iron, and their diameters and slopes are precisely matched to the original house layout. Once the displacement exceeds 10 cm, it is highly likely to cause poor drainage, with minor issues being frequent blockages that affect daily life, and major issues being pipe ruptures and leaks, which not only damage the home's decoration but may also cause losses to neighbors downstairs.

If the toilet must be moved, the following construction steps can be followed to avoid hidden dangers:

  • Conduct original pipe inspection first: Before moving, it is essential to perform a ball-passing test and a closed-water test on the original sewage pipes. The ball-passing test can detect whether there are blockages in the pipes, and the closed-water test can confirm whether there are any cracks in the pipes. Only when the original pipes are confirmed to be intact can a displacement plan be determined according to the house layout. If the displacement distance is within 10 cm, a special circular displacement device can be used; if it exceeds 15 cm, a slope elevation of more than 12° should be made, and 110 mm national standard PVC pipes should be selected. The joints should be double-fixed with waterproof glue and sealing rings to ensure good joint sealing and prevent sewage leakage.
  • Implement double protection: After the installation of the sewage pipes is completed, three ball-passing tests should be carried out to ensure that the pipes are unobstructed throughout and free from foreign objects. After that, two layers of waterproofing and one layer of polypropylene fabric protection should be applied. This can effectively prevent water leakage around the pipes and protect the bathroom structure from moisture damage.
  • Conduct acceptance testing: After the waterproofing construction is completed, a 48-hour closed-water test should be carried out. During this period, contact the homeowner downstairs to confirm that there is no leakage downstairs. Only after passing the closed-water test can the next step of tile laying be carried out.

In addition, the squat toilet in the bathroom during an old house renovation is not absolutely immovable, but any changes should be made with great caution. Because changing the squat toilet involves the sewage pipes and the waterproof layer, the construction is difficult and the risks are high. Improper handling can easily lead to water seepage or drainage problems.
