How to Treat Feces from Mobile Toilets

Admin October 08, 2026

There are various ways to treat feces from mobile toilets, and the appropriate method can be selected based on the usage scenario, environmental protection requirements, and technical conditions. Common methods are as follows:

1. Chemical Treatment By adding chemical agents (such as deodorants and decomposers), organic matter in the feces is decomposed, microbial activity is suppressed to control odors, and the decomposition of substances is accelerated. The treated feces can be collected through specialized equipment or directly discharged into the sewage system for further treatment. This method is suitable for temporary events or scenarios without fixed treatment facilities, but attention should be paid to the environmental friendliness of the chemical agents to avoid secondary pollution.

2. Anaerobic Digestion Anaerobic microorganisms are used to decompose the organic matter in the feces, producing biogas (which can be used as an energy source) and organic fertilizer (which can be used in agriculture or horticulture). This method is suitable for scenarios that are away from the municipal treatment system for a long time, such as construction sites in the wild or remote scenic spots. It can achieve resource recycling and reduce the volume of feces. However, it requires the construction of a dedicated digestion tank, and the initial investment cost is relatively high.

3. Compression and Storage The volume of feces is reduced through mechanical compression to delay the treatment demand. This method is suitable for scenarios with limited space and a need for short-term storage, such as camping sites and construction sites in the wild. The compressed feces need to be regularly transported to a centralized treatment site. The operation is simple, but it requires the cooperation of transport vehicles, which may incur transportation costs.

4. Multi-functional Sewage Outlet Design Equipped with a feces storage tank or a pre-buried septic tank, the feces are collected and treated centrally through regular manual cleaning (such as suction by a fecal suction truck). This method is commonly used in ordinary flush-type or waterless packing-type mobile toilets. It has a relatively low cost but requires frequent maintenance and is suitable for short-term events or temporary locations.

5. Mechanical Treatment Technology Equipment such as solid-liquid separation and disinfection devices are used to pre-treat the feces, reducing the solid content and killing pathogens to reduce the environmental impact. For example, vacuum suction toilets reduce water consumption through negative pressure suction and use mechanical filtration to purify the sewage, which is suitable for high-end scenic spots or Class I tourist public toilets.

6. Biodegradation Technology Microorganisms (such as aerobic bacteria and anaerobic bacteria) are used to decompose feces on-site to achieve reduction and harmlessness. Biodegradable toilets have a long collection cycle and are suitable for mountainous areas, camping sites, and other scenarios without a water supply and drainage system. However, bacteria need to be regularly supplemented to maintain the decomposition efficiency.

7. Water-saving Technologies

  • Foam Sealing Type: A small amount of water and a foaming agent are used to form a foam layer to seal odors. It saves water and has simple operation and maintenance, and is commonly seen in scenic spots and parks.
  • Recirculating Flush Type: Through filtration and purification, the sewage is recycled to reduce dependence on external water sources, which is suitable for water-scarce areas.
  • Vacuum Suction Type: The negative pressure suction technology uses a very low amount of water and has almost no odor, but the equipment cost is relatively high.
