A Mobile Home for Workers — Container Prefab Houses

Admin September 11, 2026

Container prefab houses are still a relatively niche product for most people. Hearing the name, many first think of container trucks racing down the highway, and may imagine nothing more than a tin box—cold in winter and extremely hot in summer. A chance encounter yesterday gave me a completely new perspective on container houses. Yesterday, under a gloomy sky, I was riding alone on an e-bike through Wujiang, listening to music and enjoying the breeze. Suzhou weather can turn in an instant: bean-sized raindrops pounded the ground, and there was nowhere nearby to take shelter—except for a stretch of tin buildings on a construction site, the workers' dormitories. I sought shelter in these container houses and was warmly invited inside by the friendly workers. This two-story container prefab complex is where these hardworking, warm-hearted workers live after hours. They entertain themselves right in the container houses rather than going out to busy places. Aside from chatting, sleeping, and calling family, their only real entertainment is probably playing cards. The two-story container prefab houses were nothing like the stuffy, sweltering spaces I had imagined. The workers explained that the walls and roofs are made of thick rock-wool sandwich panels, which not only provide thermal insulation but also offer excellent fire resistance and breathability. Even in such heavy rain, there was no leaking indoors. They were very satisfied with living in these movable homes. Their work moves with the construction sites, and their homes move with them. In use, container prefab houses not only save costs for employers but also bring many conveniences for workers—helping those who leave home to earn a living find a sense of home right on the job site.
