Is Light Steel Prefabricated House Moisture-Proof?

Admin September 18, 2026

Light steel prefabricated houses can be moisture-proof, but this requires scientific design and reasonable construction, as detailed below:

Moisture-Proof Design Principles

The core of moisture-proofing in light steel houses lies in controlling the migration path of water vapor and protecting the steel structure. For example, installing a waterproof and breathable membrane on the outer side of the insulation layer can effectively block external rainwater infiltration while allowing water vapor inside the wall to escape. Laying a vapor barrier membrane on the inner side of the insulation layer can prevent water vapor from the high-humidity indoor air from entering the wall interior, avoiding condensation on cold surfaces. Some high-end light steel villas adopt multi-layer moisture-proof and vapor barrier treatments, forming a water vapor barrier through a composite structure to ensure stable indoor humidity.

Material and Construction Requirements

  1. Steel Corrosion Protection: All load-bearing light steel studs must undergo hot-dip galvanizing (with a zinc coating of ≥275g/m²) or galvalume (55% aluminum + 43.4% zinc + 1.6% silicon) processes. These treatments form a dense protective layer on the steel surface, with a corrosion-resistant lifespan of over 50 years, reducing the risk of structural damage caused by rust from the source.
  2. Ground Moisture Barrier: A polyethylene moisture barrier must be laid on the ground, with the joints sealed using hot melting or specialized tape to form a continuous, seamless moisture barrier that prevents underground moisture from rising.
  3. Roof Ventilation Design: By installing ventilation ridges or eave vents, air convection is created using the thermal pressure principle to accelerate the removal of moisture from the roof space and prevent condensation buildup.

Construction Precautions

The moisture-proof effect highly depends on construction quality. For example, if the joints of the moisture barrier are not sealed, they can form channels for water vapor penetration. If the studs are exposed to rain and not dried promptly before installation, local rusting may accelerate. In humid southern regions, if light steel is used for overall house construction, the high humidity during the rainy season may pose a rusting risk to ordinary light steel structures. In such cases, an upgraded version with pressurized cement fiber boards (which can absorb and slowly release some moisture) should be chosen, or annual rust prevention maintenance (such as applying anti-rust paint) should be carried out.

Performance Comparison Advantages

Through reasonable design, the moisture-proof performance of light steel houses can reach or even surpass that of traditional buildings. For example, Yongshu light steel villas, through multi-layer moisture-proof and vapor barrier treatments, effectively solve problems such as wall seepage and floor dampness during the return of south wind days, maintaining indoor humidity within a comfortable range of 40%-60% for a long time.
