How to Make Wood Grain on Prefabricated Houses

Admin September 18, 2026

The wood grain on prefabricated houses can be achieved through the application of wood grain paint, mainly involving three steps: base treatment, creating texture with one base coat and one top coat, and long-lasting protection. Here are the specific operations:

1. Base Treatment
The quality of the base layer directly affects the adhesion and final appearance of the wood grain paint. First, thoroughly inspect the base surface, checking for unevenness by hand, and focusing on identifying defects such as cracks and holes. If any are found, fill them in with cement mortar and level them. Then, use 120-grit sandpaper or a sander to finely sand the surface, increasing its roughness to provide better adhesion for the paint. After sanding, clean the surface thoroughly: first, sweep away dust with a brush, and then wipe it with a damp cloth until it is spotless. If the base surface is a cement wall, apply 1-2 layers of putty first to ensure a smooth and even surface, preventing graininess or peeling of subsequent paint layers.

2. Creating Texture with One Base Coat and One Top Coat
This step is crucial for forming the wood grain and needs to be completed in three parts:

  • Applying Anti-Alkali Sealing Primer: Select a high-quality anti-alkali primer and apply it evenly with a roller, covering the entire base surface. The primer prevents cement alkali from seeping out, enhances adhesion, and unifies the base surface color, providing a stable foundation for subsequent coats. Wait 2-4 hours for the primer to dry completely (if using a spraying method, it may dry in 2 hours under suitable temperatures; apply a second coat to any exposed areas).
  • Applying Base Color Paint: Thoroughly stir the wood grain paint base color and apply it evenly using a cross-hatch method. The base color determines the base tone of the wood grain, so choose a color according to design requirements, such as light wood or dark brown.
  • Timing the Wood Grain Creation: Immediately create the wood grain when the base color paint is surface-dry but not fully dry (it does not stick to the hand but still feels moist). Use a dedicated wood grain tool, keeping your wrist relaxed and movements natural and continuous without repetition: pull straight for straight grains and arc for annual rings. Alternatively, while applying the wood grain top coat with a roller, you can create the wood grain simultaneously, but ensure it is done on the wet top coat to prevent the paint from drying and failing to form the texture.

3. Long-Lasting Protection
It takes 24 hours for the wood grain paint to dry completely. After it is dry, apply two coats of a high-transparency dust-proof varnish evenly, with a 2-hour interval between coats. The varnish protects against UV rays, water, moisture, dust, and dirt, and enhances wear resistance, extending the lifespan of the wood grain paint. Alternatively, you can apply a layer of top coat after the wood grain texture is dry, which has a similar effect.

By following these steps, the surface of the prefabricated house can achieve a natural and realistic wood grain effect, combining aesthetics with practicality.
