How to Make a Portable Toilet by Yourself
Admin October 19, 2026
You can refer to the following methods to make a portable toilet by yourself, and choose the appropriate plan according to the usage scenario, material conditions, and functional requirements:

1. Water Storage Bucket Modification Method (Suitable for Long-Term Fixed Usage Scenarios)
- Basic Structure Construction: Split a household water storage bucket in half with an angle grinder. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for mobility. Use wooden strips and self-tapping screws to fix them on the upper side of the bucket to increase height and form a frame structure.
- Functional Module Installation:
- Door and Wall: Cut an opening on the side of the water storage bucket for the door. Install sponge strips on both sides to form a door frame. Embed plastic soft boards to create raised walls. Use foam strips to拼接 (piece together) discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a simple door. Drill holes in the door to install connectors.
- Roof and Waterproofing: Invert the upper half of the water storage bucket onto the top of the wooden strips as a roof. Paint the wooden strips with white waterproof paint to enhance aesthetics.
- Drainage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the bucket and install a drain pipe to form a floor drain. Drill holes on the side and bottom to connect direct connectors. Insert a plastic bucket as a small water storage device. Connect the drain pipe to a sewage bucket. Extend a three-way outlet pipe horizontally to the door as the inlet pipe for a handwashing basin.
- Sanitary Facilities: Place a toilet and install a water tank, fixing it with glass glue. Install a three-way connector below the inlet pipe to connect a showerhead, enabling simple bathing functions.
2. Water Storage Tank and Pallet Combination Method (Suitable for Temporary and Lightweight Needs)
- Mobile Base Construction: Select a plastic pallet as the base platform. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom to ensure a stable structure and easy mobility.
- Water Storage Tank Adaptation: Adjust the size of the pallet according to the dimensions of the water storage tank. The tank can be placed directly on the pallet or secured with straps, suitable for temporary water storage or simple flushing scenarios.
3. Simple Temporary Toilet Solutions (Suitable for Outdoor or Emergency Scenarios)
- Portable Toilet: Composed of a foldable frame and disposable garbage bags. After unfolding the frame, insert a special garbage bag. Seal the bag opening after defecation and discard it, eliminating the need to handle excrement. Suitable for camping or short trips.
- Bucket Toilet:
- Material Preparation: A 10-20 liter plastic bucket with a lid, thick garbage bags, absorbent materials (such as cat litter or wood shavings), toilet paper, disinfectant, and optionally a simple tent or screen.
- Assembly Steps: Line the bucket with a garbage bag and secure the edges. Spread 2-3 centimeters of absorbent material at the bottom. Place toilet paper and disinfectant inside. Install handrails or supports beside the bucket. Use a tent or screen to create a private space and place it on a flat surface.
- Tent Toilet: Combine a small tent with a portable toilet or bucket toilet device. The tent provides a privacy barrier. Ensure good ventilation to avoid stuffiness.
4. Handmade Simple Toilet (Suitable for Long-Term Use in Fixed Locations)
- Basic Structure: Dig a toilet ditch and connect it to the sewer to ensure that excrement is directly discharged into the municipal sewer network. Erect four columns as a frame. Enclose the walls with tiles or waterproof panels and lay anti-slip floor tiles on the ground.
- Creative Design: Refer to the design concept of children's toy toilets to make an openable and closable toilet lid and hidden storage cabinets. Use metal hinges to fix the toilet lid to ensure a stable structure and avoid卫生死角 (hard-to-clean areas).
