How to Decorate Prefabricated Houses
The decoration of prefabricated houses requires systematic planning from aspects such as base layer treatment, space optimization, module connection, and construction details, taking into account their structural characteristics. The specific key points are as follows:

I. Wood Strip Installation and Height Unification
The heights of the original wooden beams in prefabricated houses (especially villa-type ones) may vary. It is necessary to install wood strips to unify the height of the installation surface for gypsum boards. When adjusting the height of the wood strips, an electric screwdriver should be used instead of an impact wrench to avoid errors caused by excessive rotational speed. At the same time, a level should be used to locate the lowest point to ensure that all wood strips are at the same height, preventing the gypsum board from cracking due to uneven stress. In addition, the gaps between the wood strips (usually 20 millimeters high) can be used to hide electrical wires, reducing the damage to the structure caused by later slotting.
II. Fine Treatment of the Wall Base Layer
The surfaces of prefabricated panels (such as prefabricated concrete panels) often have pores, release agent residues, or cracks. Directly applying putty can easily lead to peeling or cracking. Three steps of treatment are required before decoration:
- Cleaning and Polishing: Polish the uneven areas on the surface with sandpaper to remove oil stains, dust, and loose particles;
- Joint Treatment: Use joint filler to fill the gaps between prefabricated panels to prevent cracking caused by thermal expansion and contraction later;
- Interface Agent Application: Apply a special interface agent on the base layer to enhance the bonding force between the putty and the wall, reducing the risk of hollowing.
III. Optimized Design of Space Functions
The modular characteristics of prefabricated houses provide convenience for space transformation. For example, a prefabricated kitchen can achieve an integrated dining and kitchen area through an open-plan layout design: Remove the partition wall between a linear kitchen and the dining room to increase the work surface and storage space while improving the interactive experience during cooking. When designing, note the following:
- Plan the positions of water and electricity pipelines in advance to avoid damaging the prefabricated structure during later modifications;
- Use modular furniture (such as a movable island) to enhance space flexibility.
IV. Sealing and Aesthetic Treatment of Module Connections
In China, prefabricated houses mostly use factory-prefabricated ceilings, floors, and water and electricity pipelines, which are assembled on-site. During decoration, it is necessary to focus on treating the connections between modules:
- Use sealant to fill the gaps to prevent air leakage and water seepage;
- Cover the connection marks with decorative moldings or wall panels to improve the overall aesthetics;
- Check the assembly accuracy of the modules to ensure that doors, windows, cabinets, etc., are seamlessly connected to the walls.
V. Construction Tools and Detail Control
- Tool Selection: Give priority to using low-speed electric tools (such as an electric screwdriver) to avoid loosening of wood strips or gypsum boards caused by the vibration of an impact wrench;
- Level Calibration: Use a laser level to assist in positioning to ensure that the installation surfaces of wood strips, ceilings, etc., are flat;
- Moisture-Proof Treatment: In wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, the surfaces of prefabricated panels need to be coated with waterproof paint, and drainage slopes should be reserved.
By following the above steps, the problems of structural adaptation, functional optimization, and durability in the decoration of prefabricated houses can be effectively solved, taking into account both practicality and aesthetics.
