How to Clean a Mobile Caravan Toilet

Admin September 28, 2026

The cleaning method for a mobile caravan toilet depends on the type of toilet, mainly divided into two types: smart biodegradable toilets and direct-discharge/sewage-storage-box toilets. The specific operations are as follows:

I. Cleaning of Smart Biodegradable Toilets
This type of toilet decomposes excrement through bacteria. The core principle is to use biodegradable materials such as coconut shells and wood shavings, combined with an electric stirring device to accelerate the decomposition process. The decomposition efficiency is relatively high, usually converting excrement into odorless substances within a few minutes, and does not require frequent cleaning.

  1. Replacement Cycle of Degradable Materials: Adjust the replacement frequency according to the number of users. For single-person use, replace the degradable materials approximately every 60 days; for double-person use, shorten the cycle to 30-40 days.
  2. Disposal of Decomposed Materials: The replaced decomposed materials can be directly used for plant cultivation as they have been transformed into fertilizers rich in organic matter, meeting environmental protection requirements.
  3. Operation Precautions: Regularly check whether the electric stirring device is working properly to avoid decomposition residues caused by insufficient stirring; at the same time, keep the inside of the toilet dry to prevent a decrease in bacterial activity.

II. Cleaning of Direct-Discharge and Sewage-Storage-Box Toilets
Both types of toilets store excrement physically and require manual cleaning of the sewage storage device, but the operation methods are slightly different.

  1. Direct-Discharge Toilets:
    • Location of the Storage Box: Located below the toilet, equipped with a manual pull switch (usually at the bottom of the vehicle, requiring external operation).
    • Cleaning Conditions: Only operate in areas where fecal discharge is allowed (such as designated campsites) to avoid environmental pollution.
    • Operation Steps: Open the switch at the bottom of the vehicle, directly discharge the excrement from the storage box, close the switch after completion, and check the tightness.
  2. Sewage-Storage-Box Toilets:
    • Location of the Sewage Storage Box: There is a small hatch on the exterior of the vehicle body, and the sewage storage box is a small portable design.
    • Cleaning Process: Open the hatch and pull out the sewage storage box; the toilet opening automatically closes to prevent leakage; take the sewage storage box to a designated location, empty the excrement, rinse the box body with clean water, and then return it to its original position.
  3. Wastewater Tank Management:
    • Monitoring Capacity: The vehicle is equipped with a water level gauge to display the capacity of the freshwater tank and the wastewater tank in real-time. It is recommended to clean the wastewater tank when it reaches two-thirds of its capacity.
    • Discharge Method: In foreign countries, an 88mm drainage connector is usually used to connect a conduit and discharge the wastewater into the sewage treatment pool at the campsite; due to the lack of relevant facilities in China, it is necessary to find compliant discharge points on your own (such as public toilets or sanitation treatment stations).

III. General Maintenance Suggestions

  1. Regularly use a special cleaner to wipe the inner wall of the toilet to avoid the accumulation of dirt;
  2. In winter, empty the freshwater tank and the wastewater tank to prevent pipe freezing and cracking;
  3. Wear gloves when cleaning to avoid direct contact with excrement and ensure hygiene and safety.
