How to Build a House with Containers
Admin September 17, 2026
Building a house with containers requires modular design, dividing the building into independent units, which are prefabricated in factories and assembled on-site. The core process includes factory prefabrication, on-site assembly, and advantages and characteristics.

I. Factory Prefabrication Stage
- Structural Manufacturing: Primarily using steel-frame structures, 1.2-6mm steel plates are cut, pressed, and welded with profiled sections to form standardized container units. The container surfaces can be sprayed with personalized logos to meet customization needs.
- Functional Integration: Simultaneously complete the wall insulation system (such as rock wool or polyurethane foam sandwich layers),预留 (reserved) pipeline routes, and equipment installation. For example, electrical wiring is embedded in wall panel conduits, and water supply and drainage pipes are arranged along elevated trenches, reducing on-site construction complexity.
- Decorative Construction: The interior space is gradually improved, with the exterior walls using corrosion-resistant steel plates and eco-friendly panels, combined with ship anti-corrosion technology to ensure a service life of over 20 years. Interior decoration can be completed in advance, shortening the on-site construction period.
II. On-site Assembly Stage
- Transportation and Hoisting: Prefabricated modules are transported to the site using specialized vehicles and assembled using hoisting equipment (such as cranes). The module sizes are typically standard specifications ranging from 20 to 60 feet, supporting stacking up to 7 stories high to meet different architectural needs.
- Connection and Fixing: Columns and ground beams are fixed using U-shaped channels and expansion bolts to ensure structural stability; rubber seals are embedded between wall panels and secured with self-tapping screws to prevent water leakage; roof panels are connected using self-locking interlocking structures to enhance waterproofing performance.
- Functional System Integration: Electrical wiring is connected along embedded conduits, water supply and drainage pipes are connected to municipal systems, and air layers are set on the roof to achieve passive cooling, reducing energy consumption.
III. Advantages and Characteristics
- Efficiency Improvement: Factory prefabrication reduces issues of waiting for different trades and site transitions, making it particularly suitable for projects with a large number of repetitive modules (such as emergency housing and temporary office areas), with construction periods shortened by 30%-50% compared to traditional buildings.
- Quality Control: Unified processes and inspection nodes for work procedures (such as welding quality and structural dimensions) ensure that each module meets standards, reducing on-site construction error rates.
- Flexible Application: Supports customized design and can be stacked and assembled into residential buildings, office buildings, schools, and other scenarios. Moreover, modules can be disassembled and reassembled to adapt to site changes.
Container houses, through industrial production and modular assembly, balance efficiency, quality, and flexibility, representing an important innovation direction in the modern construction field.
