Relocation of High-rise Toilet Positions

Admin September 22, 2026

The position of high-rise toilets can be relocated, but it must be done in accordance with drainage types, relocation principles, and methods, while also addressing legal and neighborly relationship issues.

I. Drainage Types and Relocation Methods

  1. Same-floor Drainage (Sunken Bathroom)

    • The drainage pipes are located on the floor of the same level, making modifications relatively convenient. Relocation methods include directly extending or shortening the pipes or using a relocation device. When relocating a sunken bathroom, the relocation distance should be controlled to no more than 400 millimeters, otherwise, it may affect drainage efficiency.
    • If further adjustments are needed, ensure there is sufficient sunken space on the floor and redo the waterproofing to avoid leakage risks.
  2. Inter-floor Drainage (Drainage Pipes Pass Through the Floor)

    • The drainage pipes are located above the ceiling of the downstairs resident, and modifications require penetrating the floor, which may involve neighborly coordination. Relocation methods include:
      • Using a relocation device: The floor needs to be raised, and a drainage slope should be set. The relocation distance is recommended to be no more than 2 meters, otherwise, it is prone to blockage;
      • Converting floor drainage to wall drainage: Connect the toilet to the adjacent wall of the sewage riser, suitable for both same-floor and inter-floor drainage, but requires re-planning the pipe layout;
      • Negotiating with neighbors to modify the sewage pipe: Requires the consent of the downstairs resident, which is difficult and usually considered as a last resort.

II. Relocation Principles

  1. Principle of Necessity

    • Relocation should only be carried out when the spatial layout is unreasonable, the pit distance does not match, or the owner has a strong demand. Relocation involves the position of the drain outlet and waterproofing treatment. Improper operation may lead to water leakage and seepage problems, so careful evaluation is required.
  2. Principle of Distance Control

    • The shorter the relocation distance, the better. It is recommended to be controlled within 30 centimeters and no more than 1 meter. A long distance can easily cause the drainage horizontal pipe to bend, increasing the risk of blockage, which needs to be alleviated through slope design.
  3. Principle of Pipe Inspection

    • Before relocation, check whether the drainage pipe is a U-shaped trap. If so, take measures (such as adding an exhaust valve) to prevent blockage caused by the interaction of air pressure and ensure smooth drainage.

III. Legal and Neighborly Relationships

  1. Risk of Building Structure Alteration

    • If the relocation involves alterations to the main building structure or load-bearing components, a design plan must be proposed by the original design unit or a qualified unit. Otherwise, fines may be imposed (50,000 to 100,000 yuan for individuals, 500,000 to 1,000,000 yuan for units).
  2. Restrictions on Changes in House Use Functions

    • It is prohibited to convert a room without waterproofing requirements into a bathroom. Violators will be ordered to make corrections and fined (500 to 1,000 yuan for renovators, 1,000 to 10,000 yuan for decoration and renovation enterprises).
  3. Neighborly Coordination and Property Notification

    • Relocation requires the consent of neighbors and the property management. Otherwise, disputes may arise due to violations of the principle of adjacent relationships (Article 288 of the Civil Code). Owners should notify the property service enterprise in advance when renovating, and the property should inform the owner of prohibited behaviors and precautions.
