What is the Height of Steps for Mobile Toilets

Admin September 26, 2026

The height of steps for mobile toilets varies depending on the design, with a common range between 100mm and 400mm. This can be divided into the following two scenarios:

1. Step height in special design scenarios
Some mobile public toilets adopt higher step designs due to functional requirements or site constraints. For example, the step height of a certain type of mobile public toilet is clearly marked as 400mm (i.e., 40 centimeters). Such designs are typically found in scenarios that require flood prevention, moisture resistance, or adaptation to special terrains, such as coastal areas or low-lying regions. Higher steps can effectively prevent rainwater from flowing back into the toilet while reserving installation space for internal facilities (such as water tanks and sewage pipes). However, this design may pose usage barriers for the elderly, children, or individuals with mobility impairments, necessitating the use of auxiliary facilities such as handrails or ramps.

2. Recommended step height in conventional design scenarios
According to ergonomic and universal design principles, the step height of mobile toilets is generally recommended to be set between 100mm and 150mm (i.e., 10 centimeters to 15 centimeters). This range is based on the following considerations:

  • Safety: Excessively high steps (e.g., over 20 centimeters) increase the risk of falls, especially for the elderly or disabled individuals; while excessively low steps (e.g., below 5 centimeters) may cause users to trip due to misjudgment of the ground height difference.
  • Comfort: A step height of 10-15 centimeters aligns with the stride habits of most people, allowing them to ascend and descend without excessive leg lifting or posture adjustments, reducing fatigue.
  • Universality: This height range is compatible with the minimum slope requirements for wheelchair ramps (usually 1:12), facilitating subsequent barrier-free modifications.

Design recommendations: If mobile toilets need to balance universality and functionality, the following optimization plans can be considered:

  • Install double-step entrances (e.g., 15 centimeters per step, totaling 30 centimeters) and provide barrier-free access with a 1:12 slope;
  • Add anti-slip strips or fluorescent warning strips at the edges of steps to enhance safety in nighttime or wet environments;
  • For special scenarios (such as temporary events or disaster relief settlements), prioritize the selection of modular mobile toilets with adjustable heights to adapt to different terrains.
