Height of Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

The height of container houses varies depending on their type and purpose, with common height ranges between 2.4 meters and 2.9 meters, and some customized or special types reaching 2.896 meters or even higher. Here is a detailed analysis:

1. Height of Standard Container Houses
Standard container houses are modified based on 20-foot and 40-foot containers, and their heights generally adhere to international standards. For example, the external height of a 20-foot standard container (20GP) is 2591 millimeters (approximately 2.59 meters), with an internal usable height of 2350 millimeters (approximately 2.35 meters). The external height of a 40-foot standard container (40GP) is also 2591 millimeters, with the same internal height as the 20-foot container. These container houses are mostly used for single-person offices, dormitories, or shops, with height designs that balance transportation convenience and basic living needs.

2. Height of High-Cube Container Houses
To meet application scenarios with special height requirements (such as exhibition halls and housing), 40-foot high-cube containers (40HQ) have emerged. Their external height is increased to 2896 millimeters (approximately 2.9 meters), with an internal usable height of 2655 millimeters (approximately 2.66 meters). This design provides more vertical space for interior activities by increasing the container height, such as installing ceilings, layered partitions, or accommodating large furniture.

3. Differences Between Domestic and Export Standards
The standard dimensions of domestic general-purpose container houses are 6 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height, while the export standard dimensions are 6 meters in length, 2.4 meters in width, and 2.9 meters in height. Both have the same height, but the width difference reflects the different market demands for space utilization. For example, the domestic standard focuses more on horizontal space expansion, suitable for use in densely populated areas; the export standard takes into account international transportation compatibility.

4. Customized Height of Container Houses
In addition to standard sizes, container houses can be customized according to specific needs. Height options range from 2.6 meters, 2.7 meters, 2.8 meters, and 2.9 meters, and even higher spaces can be achieved through special designs. For example, a project combined a 40-foot high-cube container with a regular container, creating an intermediate covered space through parallel arrangement, which further increased the internal height due to module stacking. Additionally, adjustable-height container houses, through mechanical structures or modular designs, enable dynamic height adjustments during use to adapt to different scenarios.
