Gansu Earthquake Emergency Mobile Toilets

Admin September 27, 2026

In the emergency scenarios of the Gansu earthquake, mobile toilets effectively addressed the sanitation challenges faced by affected residents through rapid deployment and functional adaptability, becoming a key facility for post-disaster emergency support.

1. Emergency Deployment Efficiency of Mobile Toilets

During the 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Jishishan, Gansu, the Chinese Red Cross mobilized its national-level public health rescue team to achieve rapid setup through modular design. By December 30, 2023, a total of 383 mobile toilets had been installed, serving over 20,000 affected residents, with each toilet averaging approximately 52 users. This efficient deployment was made possible by standardized components and pre-assembled structures, enabling rescue teams to complete installations within hours and avoiding sanitation risks associated with the long construction periods of traditional toilets.

2. Functional Design Tailored to Earthquake Emergency Needs

Mobile toilets developed in the Longnan region of Gansu integrate multiple practical features to address mountainous terrain and dispersed demand:

  • Environmental Adaptability: Utilizing freeze-resistant insulation materials, these toilets function normally at temperatures as low as -20°C. Corrosion-resistant and rust-proof structures extend equipment lifespan, adapting to complex post-disaster environments.
  • Sanitation Assurance: Ventilation and deodorization systems combined with biodegradation technology reduce odors and pathogen growth. Sewage storage designs prevent secondary pollution, while some models include disinfection modules to lower infectious disease risks.
  • Rapid Response: Their portable design supports transportation by helicopter or vehicle, making them suitable for severely damaged road areas. The plug-and-play functionality requires no water or electricity connections, meeting the needs of temporary settlement sites.

3. Type Selection and Scenario Matching

Mobile toilets are categorized into three types based on post-disaster stages and regional characteristics:

  • Economical Packaging Type: Using biodegradable plastic bags for waste collection, these toilets require no flushing and are suitable for initial post-earthquake or short-term settlement sites, serving 200-300 people per day.
  • Standard Water-Flush Type: Equipped with compact sewage treatment units, these support water recycling and are ideal for regular township deployment, meeting medium- to long-term settlement needs.
  • Eco-Integrated Type: Combining solar power and microbial treatment technologies, these handle up to 500 people daily and are suitable for water-scarce or ecologically sensitive areas, such as disaster zones near the Qilian Mountains Nature Reserve in Gansu.

4. Extended Value in Multiple Scenarios

Beyond earthquake emergencies, Gansu's mobile toilets have been promoted to scenic spots, township markets, and other settings. For example, the Guan'e Gorge scenic area in Longnan deploys mobile toilets during peak tourist seasons to alleviate pressure, while modular designs along municipal construction routes allow flexible relocation based on project progress, embodying a "dual-use for peace and emergency" facility planning concept.
