How to Design a Simple Portable Toilet

Admin October 08, 2026

The design of a simple portable toilet should take into account portability, self-cleaning capabilities, water and energy conservation, and the needs of different user groups, which can be achieved through modular structures, smart facilities, and rational layouts.

1. Portability Design

The use of modular structures and lightweight materials is essential. The main frame can be made of lightweight metals such as high-strength aluminum alloy or carbon fiber, ensuring structural stability while reducing overall weight for easy manual handling or mechanical lifting. For the outer shell and interior decorative components, it is recommended to use waterproof and corrosion-resistant composite materials (such as fiberglass or engineering plastics) to enhance durability and simplify the cleaning process. Modular design allows for independent disassembly and reassembly of components, meeting the rapid deployment needs of temporary events, disaster relief, and other scenarios. For example, by using standardized interfaces to connect walls, roofs, and bases, assembly or disassembly can be completed within 10 minutes.

2. Self-Cleaning and Smart Facility Design

The introduction of smart sensing systems can significantly reduce manual maintenance costs. Smart sensor flushing devices automatically flush after detecting the user's departure through infrared or microwave sensors, preventing water waste; automatic deodorization systems can integrate photocatalyst or activated carbon filtration modules to decompose odor molecules in real-time, keeping the air fresh. Additionally, the interior walls can be coated with antibacterial nano-coatings to inhibit bacterial growth and extend the cleaning cycle. If the budget is limited, mechanical foot-operated flushing devices can also be used to reduce failure rates.

3. Water and Energy Conservation and Comfort Optimization

Water conservation design should control water usage from the source. For example, dual-flush toilets (1 liter per flush for urination, 3 liters per flush for defecation) or vacuum suction toilets (0.5 liters per flush) can be used, paired with small-scale water storage tanks (recommended capacity of 200-500 liters) to meet basic needs. For energy conservation, solar panels can be installed on the roof to power LED lighting or small ventilation fans, automatically switching to human-sensing lighting mode at night. To enhance comfort, the interior should reserve at least a 1.2m × 1.2m space and be equipped with ventilation windows or forced ventilation systems to avoid stuffiness; the floor should use non-slip tiles or rubber mats to reduce the risk of slipping.

4. Design for Special User Groups

Accessibility needs should be considered: the entrance width should be ≥90 cm, and the interior passage width should be ≥80 cm; the door handle height should be lowered to 80-90 cm for easy operation by wheelchair users; L-shaped handrails (70-80 cm from the ground) should be installed inside to assist in standing up; space should be reserved on both sides of the toilet for caregiver assistance. For children, the height of the sink can be lowered to 60 cm and equipped with a footstool.

5. Low-Cost Simple Solution (Water Storage Tank Modification)

If the budget is limited, refer to the case of modifying a water storage tank:

  1. Structural Construction: Split a 200-liter plastic water storage tank vertically, fix universal wheels at the bottom, use wooden strips to raise the top and install plastic soft panels as walls, and invert the upper half as the roof.
  2. Function Integration: Drill a hole at the bottom of the tank to install a drain pipe as a floor drain, and connect a small water storage tank (50 liters) on the side for handwashing; use a portable folding toilet and place it directly above the floor drain.
  3. Detail Optimization: Install a magnetic soft curtain at the entrance instead of a rigid door, and paste waterproof wallpaper on the interior walls to enhance aesthetics.

Such solutions can cost less than 500 yuan, but require regular cleaning of the water storage tank and manual emptying of sewage, suitable for short-term emergency use.
