Countries with Developed Prefabricated Housing

Admin September 18, 2026

Countries with relatively developed prefabricated housing include Australia, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, among others.

Australia: Since the 1960s, Australia has proactively proposed the concept of 'rapid-installation prefabricated housing,' leading the way in industry innovation. In 1987, the advent of high-strength cold-formed thin-walled steel structures provided more robust and durable structural support for prefabricated housing. The implementation of the AS/NZS4600 standard in 1996 further advanced the standardization process for light-steel villas, ensuring the quality and safety of the houses. Currently, Australia constructs approximately 120,000 light-steel frame independent houses annually, with their output value accounting for 24% of the construction business, fully demonstrating the prevalence and economic contribution of prefabricated housing in the country.

United States: The development of the light-steel villa market in the United States is equally remarkable. From a 15% market share in 1965 to 75% in 2000, this leap not only reflects the rapid growth in market demand but also underscores the mainstream status of light-steel villas in the U.S. residential market. The standardization and serialization level of residential components in the United States reaches 100%, and the rental rate of construction machinery is also 40%. These advantages collectively promote the efficient construction and widespread application of light-steel villas. In 2000, the number of houses built using the light-steel system in the United States reached 325,000, highlighting the vigorous development of prefabricated housing in the country.

Japan and the United Kingdom: Driven by environmental policies, these two countries actively promote light-steel villas, optimizing designs based on their unique climatic and geological conditions. Japan, located in an earthquake-prone area, places particular emphasis on enhancing the seismic performance of its light-steel villas, forming an adaptable and seismically resilient architectural system. The United Kingdom, through technological innovation and material optimization, has improved the energy efficiency and comfort of prefabricated housing, meeting modern demands for high-quality living environments.

Additionally, China's prefabricated houses have also been widely applied globally, particularly in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, and countries along the 'Belt and Road' such as Indonesia and Egypt, where demand is strong, showcasing the international competitiveness and influence of China's prefabricated housing industry.
