COSCO Container Custom Housing
COSCO container custom housing takes modularity and standardization as its core, achieving efficient construction and functional upgrades through technological innovation, forming a replicable architectural solution.

1. Efficient Construction System
The Qidong container factory under COSCO Shipping Development achieves rapid construction through modular design. Taking a three-story office building precisely assembled from 96 specially made housing containers as an example, the container manufacturing took only 6 days, and the on-site assembly took 5 days, resulting in a total construction period of just 11 days. The key lies in standardizing the entire process from design, production, transportation, installation, to decoration, forming a mature engineering system. For instance, containers are pre-installed with thermal insulation walls, heat-insulating doors and windows, and sound insulation and noise reduction features in the factory, and then directly assembled on-site, reducing cross-operations in construction and significantly improving efficiency.
2. Structural Technological Innovation
1. Lightweight Skeleton Design
6mm steel plates are bent and formed to replace traditional heavy square tubes as the top beams, bottom beams, and side beams. While maintaining structural stability, this approach saves on steel costs and reduces transportation expenses. At the same time, container welding and assembly technology replaces the traditional 'small iron knobs' at the four corners of containers, resulting in a cleaner and more streamlined building facade and enhancing the overall frame's load-bearing capacity and safety performance.
2. High-Precision Prefabrication Process
Factory prefabrication enables precise control over container dimensions, reducing on-site assembly errors. For example, the modular office building is composed of 48 6-meter standard containers and 48 14-meter extended containers, requiring strict dimensional matching to ensure assembly accuracy. The prefabrication process also integrates functional modules such as thermal insulation, ventilation, and moisture resistance, enhancing the building's overall performance.
3. Functional Adaptability Upgrades
1. Environmental Adaptability Optimization
For high-altitude climates, a combination design of 'cold bridge prevention + gutter structure + detachable sunshade + sunroom' is adopted to strengthen cold resistance, thermal insulation, drainage, and lighting performance. For example, in the Tibet aid project, double-row louvered windows on the exterior of containers provide ventilation and moisture resistance, while solar panels and expanded battery capacity on the roof enhance energy self-sufficiency.
2. Space Utilization Efficiency Improvement
'Spatial magic' is achieved through staggered assembly. For instance, a double-story housing container uses structural interlocking technology, with the first floor arranged with a kitchen, storage room, warehouse, and bathroom, and the second floor featuring a large dining hall with activity and training functions, maximizing space utilization. The cultural and tourism station incorporates details such as double doors at the rear storage room and vertically arranged solar panels on the roof, balancing practicality and aesthetics.
4. Standardization and Replicability
COSCO Shipping Development has systematized the 'container + building' model, forming a full-chain standard from R&D to decoration. This model has been validated through multiple projects and demonstrates strong adaptability. For example, the high-altitude aid project adjusts container specifications according to transportation limitations, using special steel and thickened thermal insulation layers; the modular office building 2.0 version is upgraded with new technologies and materials to meet different site and functional requirements, showcasing technological versatility and engineering replicability.
