Cost Budget for Self-Building a Container House
Admin September 17, 2026
The cost of self-building a container house is not fixed and is influenced by factors such as the condition of the container (new or used), design, decoration standards, and material selection. The comprehensive cost ranges from approximately 1,000 yuan to over 5,000 yuan per square meter, with a total budget ranging from 5,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan.

I. Cost Composition and Influencing Factors
- Container Cost: The price of a second-hand container (8-90% new) ranges from 3,000 yuan to 8,000 yuan per unit, while a brand-new custom container can cost from 10,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan or even higher per unit. The choice of container directly affects the base cost.
- Thermal Insulation Materials: Rock wool boards cost from 50 yuan to 150 yuan per square meter, while polyurethane boards range from 80 yuan to 200 yuan per square meter. In colder climates, higher-standard materials are required, increasing costs accordingly.
- Structural Reinforcement and Steel: Steel prices range from 4,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan per ton. Standard container modifications require 0.5 to 1 ton of steel, with costs ranging from approximately 2,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan. Complex designs or multi-story structures increase steel usage.
- Interior and Exterior Decoration Materials: Exterior wall decoration options include metal carved panels (80-150 yuan per square meter) and cement fiber boards (60-120 yuan per square meter). Interior decoration includes flooring, integrated wall panels (100-200 yuan per square meter), and broken bridge aluminum doors and windows (800-1,500 yuan per square meter), with significant cost variations.
- Water, Electricity, and Infrastructure: Material costs for pipelines, switches, sockets, sanitary ware, and lighting fixtures typically range from 2,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan. If an independent water and electricity system (such as solar power) is required, costs increase further.
- Other Expenses: Freight charges (ranging from several hundred to several thousand yuan), lifting fees (approximately 500-1,500 yuan per lift), and foundation construction costs (such as cement foundations, approximately 2,000-5,000 yuan) need to be included separately.
II. Budget Plans by Purpose
- Entry-Level (Temporary Housing/Storage): Simple decoration of a second-hand container, with a total budget ranging from 5,000 yuan to 50,000 yuan. For example, a 20-foot second-hand container (approximately 3,000 yuan) + simple decoration (2,000 yuan) is suitable for short-term use scenarios.
- Practical-Level (Self-Living/Small Office): Basic decoration of a brand-new container, with a budget ranging from 50,000 yuan to 150,000 yuan. For example, a 20-foot self-living container house with a brand-new container (15,000 yuan) + thermal insulation decoration (20,000 yuan) + kitchen and bathroom equipment (10,000 yuan) has a total cost of approximately 45,000 yuan.
- High-End Level (Homestay/High-End Self-Use): Custom container with elaborate decoration, with a budget ranging from 150,000 yuan to over 300,000 yuan. For example, a single room in a container homestay with a custom loft container (50,000 yuan) + elaborate decoration (80,000 yuan) + soft furnishings and landscaping (40,000 yuan) has a total cost of approximately 170,000 yuan.
III. Impact of Area and Decoration Standards
Taking a 400-square-meter container house as an example, with an estimated base cost of 1,000 yuan per square meter, the total cost is approximately 400,000 yuan (excluding decoration costs). If a medium decoration standard (2,500 yuan to 5,000 yuan per square meter) is adopted, the total cost may double to between 1 million yuan and 2 million yuan.
