Container House Alley Design Drawing

Admin September 17, 2026

Currently, there is no publicly available complete design drawing of container house alleys for direct reference, but design ideas can be analyzed by combining the design concepts of the container building project in the southern area of Sanlitun, Beijing.

The container building project in the southern area of Sanlitun, Beijing, was designed by LOT - EK, a New York-based container architecture expert firm, providing highly innovative ideas for the design of container house alleys.

I. Structural Reconstruction and Space Utilization This project reconstructs traditional alleyways using metal frames combined with cargo ship containers. In alley design, this idea can be borrowed. By utilizing the modular nature of containers, multiple containers can be combined and spliced using metal frames to break the single spatial form of traditional alleys. For example, stacking containers vertically can create multi-level spaces, increasing the three-dimensionality and layering of buildings in the alley. Or arranging containers horizontally can expand the width of the alley, providing wider passage spaces for pedestrians. At the same time, containers can be randomly inserted into building facades and protrude into the alleyways. This design approach not only creates a unique visual effect but also generates diverse functional spaces. For instance, containers protruding from building facades can serve as awnings hanging above shop entrances to shield pedestrians from wind and rain; they can also be transformed into showcases to display goods and attract customers' attention; they can also undertake other indoor functions such as small storage rooms and rest areas.

II. Functional Layout and Hierarchical Design On the second floor and above, containers can serve as shop entrances and display windows. In alley design, containers on the second floor and above can be designed as specialty shops, cafes, studios, etc., using their unique appearance and location to attract customers. At the same time, extending to the main road through a scaffold structure can further attract pedestrians' attention and increase the commercial atmosphere and popularity of the alley. For example, setting up lighting fixtures or artistic decorations on the scaffolds can make them a beautiful scenic spot in the alley at night.

III. Facade Decoration and Visual Effects This project uses orange metal mesh to wrap the building facade, increasing sunlight refraction and creating a unique light and shadow effect on the building in the sunlight. In the design of container house alleys, appropriate materials can be selected to decorate the facade, such as colored glass, metal panels, wooden grilles, etc. By combining and matching different materials, a rich visual effect can be created. At the same time, combined with lighting design, a warm, romantic, or fashionable atmosphere can be created at night, enhancing the overall quality and attractiveness of the alley.
