Collapse of Concrete Prefabricated Houses

Admin September 18, 2026

Concrete prefabricated houses are at risk of collapse, mainly due to three factors: poor seismic performance, limited load-bearing capacity, and the tendency of building components to crack.

Firstly, poor seismic performance is one of the important reasons for the collapse of concrete prefabricated houses. Concrete prefabricated houses are usually assembled from concrete components, and some low-quality prefabricated panels lack steel reinforcement, resulting in poor overall structural stability. Under the impact of natural disasters such as earthquakes, such structures are difficult to withstand huge horizontal and vertical forces and are prone to overall collapse. For example, in the Wenchuan earthquake, most of the collapsed buildings were prefabricated panel houses, which fully exposed the deficiencies of concrete prefabricated houses in terms of seismic resistance.

Secondly, limited load-bearing capacity is also a common cause of the collapse of concrete prefabricated houses. As the main load-bearing components of the house, prefabricated panels have limited load-bearing capacity. If, during use, the temporarily accumulated load is too large and exceeds the load-bearing capacity of the prefabricated panels, serious consequences such as brittle fracture and falling of the prefabricated panels will occur. For example, the prefabricated panel fracture accident that occurred in Fengshou Community, Guanba Town, Zhong County on April 11, 2024, was initially judged to be caused by an excessive temporarily accumulated load on the second-floor slab, resulting in 2 deaths and 3 injuries.

In addition, the tendency of building components to crack is also a potential risk for the collapse of concrete prefabricated houses. The building components of prefabricated panel houses are prone to cracking during long-term use due to factors such as temperature changes, humidity changes, and load effects. The gaps at the joints of the components are channels for rainwater infiltration. After rainwater infiltration, it will corrode the steel bars, reducing their strength and toughness, thereby affecting the stability of the entire structure and increasing the risk of collapse.

Therefore, for concrete prefabricated houses, regular safety inspections and maintenance should be carried out to promptly identify and address potential safety hazards and ensure the safe use of the houses.
