Chinese Street Mobile Public Toilets

Admin October 09, 2026

Mobile public toilets on Chinese streets are facilities that can be moved as a whole and placed at locations with fixed or temporary needs to provide toilet services to the public.

Origin and Purpose: The emergence of mobile public toilets stems from the temporary and phased needs for toilets in specific situations. Due to the shortage and improper layout of urban public toilets, the government has installed them in areas where it is relatively difficult to build fixed public toilets to make up for the deficiencies in the quantity and layout of public toilets and meet the public's toilet needs in different scenarios.

Development and Evolution: With technological development and diversified needs, mobile toilets have continuously evolved. In the early days, they were mostly simple wooden structures. Nowadays, they are generally made of steel-welded frames or composite materials in one piece, combined with materials such as color-coated steel plates, stainless steel, and metal carved panels, making them more sturdy, durable, and neat and beautiful in appearance. According to their structures, they can be divided into integral and combinable types; according to their moving methods, they can be classified as hoisting types, portable types, and powered/trailer types.

Treatment Technologies: When it comes to sanitation treatment, there are various technological routes. There are traditional water-flushing types, water-saving circulating water-flushing types, suction-based treatment models, dry-packing technologies that can achieve source reduction and harmless treatment, and microbial degradation technologies, etc. These can widely adapt to harsh environments without fixed water and electricity supplies or professional pipe networks.

Application Scenarios: Mobile toilets frequently appear in multiple key scenarios. At large-scale event venues where crowds gather and there is a high demand for toilets, it is necessary to quickly deploy mobile toilets. Some creative solutions even temporarily use buses for modification. In tourist attractions, especially those with vast areas and scattered tourists, mobile toilets can respond in real-time according to the flow of people while also taking into account landscape aesthetics. In harsh conditions with weak infrastructure, such as construction sites, disaster sites, and emergency rescue work in remote mountainous areas, mobile toilets can quickly improve basic sanitation for workers and disaster victims. For example, in 2023, mobile toilets were gradually installed and put into use in the Lanzhou Yellow River Scenic Area.
