Case Study | Replicable Basic Spatial Units for Future Schools

Admin September 12, 2026

"Play-Learn Block" is a rapidly deployable project-based learning space unit. As China transitions toward a post-industrial economy, education also needs to support innovative learning. This project can be quickly deployed and easily adapted to current and future education models.

Progress in education calls for greater emphasis on self-directed learning, social connection, and systematic problem-solving. Interdisciplinary project-based learning is becoming an important method for young people. "Play-Learn Block" consists of several classrooms organized as project groups around a shared common area. Educational activities take place in the central public space and invite community participation. Classrooms are separate spaces for small-group and individual learning.

"Play-Learn Block" explores how to ease the shortage of school places—namely, how to build quickly on idle urban vacant land to relieve pressure on urban school access. The building uses integrated housing modules from China Construction Technology, with framed box units as the basic prefabricated elements. All components are factory-produced, and on-site installation took only three days.

After the exhibition ends, the structure can be fully dismantled and reused. The building uses the same flat modular system employed to construct a hospital in Wuhan in 10 days. All parts are factory-produced, and on-site construction took three days. The building can also be dismantled, relocated, and reused.

As part of the "Flash Construction Strategy Park" curated by Future+ Academy, "Play-Learn Block" took part in the 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (Shenzhen–Hong Kong). During the exhibition, it served as a concrete teaching and display facility within the park. The project is a spatial teaching-aid research program for preschool children, aiming to treat space as a third pedagogical dimension in early education.
