Case Study | Modular Sports Center — Our Company

Admin September 12, 2026

As an extension of the Gilded Iguana Hotel in the town of Nosara, this sports center feels like a small village perched among the treetops, creating a public space. Aimed at an active lifestyle and physical and mental well-being, it gives locals and visitors a place to meet and interact.

Concept

Architecture firm Studio Saxe and the client both wanted to create a rich, diverse complex within the site's existing natural woodland framework. The design concept seamlessly blends human activity with the natural world, offering a place that supports body and mind.

Design

Studio Saxe broke the full building mass into several smaller volumes. These volumes sit in the gaps between the trees—separated from one another yet linked by walkways and paths—forming a diverse, intricate public place. The layout also creates a series of indoor public spaces that connect people with nature while shielding users from strong sunlight and high heat.

Construction

The steel structure was prefabricated off-site and is easy to assemble, so impact on the site is kept to a minimum while construction efficiency is maximized. In a complex, diverse ecological setting, building should stay as light and unobtrusive as possible. Deep overhangs form protected spaces on each level, and large glass walls visually link indoor and outdoor environments.

Sustainability

The project uses modular construction to minimize the building's impact on the natural landscape. The design team set out to protect existing vegetation and habitats through an intelligent approach. To that end, they broke up the massing and dispersed several smaller volumes into the gaps among trees and plants.
