Case Study | A Site-Adapted Modular Family Home

This modular home is located in the Netherlands. Architects use the interplay of design, construction, and materials to combine design freedom with a fast building process and minimal environmental impact. Each home is made of independent prefabricated components assembled on site, which not only allows free floor-plan layouts but also creates graceful curves between walls and roof.

The flexible sizes of the components and the free floor-plan layouts mean designers can respond perfectly to individual needs and environmental factors. Designers tailor an energy plan in the early stage of each design to find the best balance between passive interventions and smart technology.

The house has a clever spatial layout: the living room and the rear bedrooms are separated by a spacious foyer, where small events such as lectures and indoor concerts can be held. This zoning also gives the house neat, independent atmosphere zones.

The home runs entirely on electricity—a clean choice as long as the required power can be generated continuously. Because surrounding trees create substantial shade, electricity needs to be produced collectively nearby. Underfloor heating can also cool and is powered by an air-source heat pump.
