Can the Toilet Wall Be Moved?

Admin September 28, 2026

Whether a toilet wall can be moved requires a comprehensive assessment based on the wall's nature, building codes, and actual circumstances, and cannot be generalized. The specifics can be divided into the following scenarios:

If the wall is a load-bearing wall, moving it is strictly prohibited. Load-bearing walls are the core components supporting the building structure and directly relate to the overall stability of the house. According to Article 49 of the Construction Law of the People's Republic of China, renovation projects involving changes to the building's main structure and load-bearing components must have design plans proposed by the original design unit or a design unit with the corresponding qualification level and must be approved by relevant departments before construction can commence. Unauthorized movement or removal of a load-bearing wall not only compromises building structural safety but may also result in legal liability.

If the wall is a non-load-bearing wall (such as a lightweight partition wall), it can be moved under certain conditions. Non-load-bearing walls do not bear structural loads and can theoretically be adjusted in position according to renovation needs, but the following conditions must be met:

  1. No impact on building structural safety: It is necessary to confirm that there are no concrete beams or other structural supports beneath the wall to avoid structural issues with the ceiling or floor after movement.
  2. No damage to water and electrical piping layouts: If the wall contains embedded water pipes, electrical wires, or underfloor heating pipes, the piping routes must be replanned during movement, and joints are not allowed in the middle of underfloor heating pipes, as this can easily lead to water leakage risks.
  3. Compliance with waterproofing requirements: The bathroom is a key area for waterproofing. After moving the wall, waterproofing treatment must be redone, and a 48-hour closed water test must be conducted to ensure tight overlap between new and old waterproofing materials and avoid leakage hazards.
  4. Fulfillment of filing procedures: According to the Measures for the Administration of Interior Decoration and Renovation of Residential Buildings, moving a non-load-bearing wall requires reporting to the property management or relevant departments; otherwise, penalties may be imposed.

If the wall involves public pipes (such as sewage pipes or ventilation pipes), approval is required before movement. If the bathroom wall contains public ventilation pipes or main drainage pipes, moving the wall may affect the ventilation or drainage functions of the entire building. Such operations require approval from the property management and planning departments and coordination with neighbors to ensure that the renovation does not harm public interests.

Special circumstances requiring additional attention:

  • Old residential areas: The building structure may be aged, and even for non-load-bearing walls, professional assessment by an agency is required before movement to avoid overall stability issues caused by wall alterations.
  • During the house warranty period: Moving the wall may result in the developer refusing to assume subsequent structural or waterproofing warranty responsibilities, so communication and confirmation with the developer in advance are necessary.
