Can Domestic Toilets Be Moved?

Admin October 05, 2026

Domestic toilets can be moved, but appropriate methods must be selected based on specific scenarios and construction standards must be followed. Depending on the drainage method, spatial conditions, and usage requirements, moving methods can be divided into the following two categories:

I. Toilet Relocation (Suitable for Urban Residences)

Toilet relocation requires selecting a method based on the bathroom's drainage system (same-floor or inter-floor drainage), with the core principle being to maintain pipe slope and minimize bends to prevent sewage backflow.

  1. Short-Distance Relocation (10-40 cm)

    • Use a toilet relocation device (a PVC pipe fitting) to extend the sewage pipe for short-distance movement.
    • Construction Points: Install before laying floor tiles, ensuring a pipe slope of 1%-3% (i.e., a drop of 1-3 cm per meter) to prevent drainage issues; the longer the relocation device, the higher the slope requirement.
    • Suitable Scenarios: Minor bathroom layout adjustments, such as when the distance between the toilet and the wall is inappropriate.
  2. Long-Distance Relocation (Over 40 cm)

    • Raise the floor by 12-20 cm and lay a new sewage pipe beneath it, connecting to the main drainage stack.
    • Construction Points: The new pipe must maintain slope, with no more than two bends (to avoid clogging); after raising the floor, install steps or ramps, paying attention to the safety of the elderly/children.
    • Suitable Scenarios: Overall bathroom renovation or when the toilet needs to be moved across rooms.
  3. Wall-Hung Toilet (Concealed Installation)

    • The cistern is embedded in the wall, allowing flexible arrangement of the sewage pipe (e.g., extending horizontally to the main drainage pipe), suitable for complex layouts.
    • Construction Points: Plan the cistern location and pipe routing in advance; installation costs are higher (about 30%-50% more than a standard toilet), and maintenance requires wall removal, making operations more cumbersome.

II. Rural Domestic Mobile Toilets (Independent Structures)

In rural areas, new mobile toilets can be adopted, featuring flexible installation and low cost, suitable for scenarios without sewage systems or scattered residences.

  1. Type Selection

    • Portable Toilet: Similar to an outdoor tent toilet, with a built-in fecal storage tank requiring regular cleaning, costing about 300-500 yuan.
    • Biodegradable Type: Uses microorganisms to decompose feces, requiring no flushing, costing about 600-800 yuan, suitable for arid regions.
    • Waterless Flush Type: Covers feces with foam or chemical agents to reduce odors, costing about 500-700 yuan, requiring regular replenishment of agents.
  2. Construction Points

    • Select a model based on family size and usage frequency (e.g., a 1.2-cubic-meter fecal storage tank is recommended for a 3-5 person household);
    • Consider climatic conditions (freeze protection in the north, ventilation in the south);
    • Ensure the ground is level during installation to prevent leakage due to tilting.

Precautions: Regardless of the method, consult with property management or neighbors before moving (e.g., if involving pipe modifications on the floor below) and ensure proper waterproofing (especially at the junction between the floor and walls after toilet relocation).
