Can Camping Use Portable Toilets?

Admin October 06, 2026

Portable toilets can be used for camping. Here are common outdoor toilet solutions and their applicable scenarios:

1. Portable Toilets
Portable toilets typically consist of a detachable water tank, a toilet seat, and a sealed lid, with some models equipped with a flushing function. Their advantage lies in providing a user experience close to that of a home bathroom, making them suitable for family self-driving camping or RV travel scenarios. When using, it is important to regularly clean up waste and carry sufficient cleaning agents and disinfectants. Some high-end models feature a double-layer sealed design that effectively isolates odors, but they are bulkier and heavier, requiring ample storage space.

2. Disposable Emergency Bags
These products are made of high-strength waterproof materials and contain coagulants and deodorizers. When used, the bag is unfolded and placed on a simple stand or directly on the ground. After contact with the coagulant, waste forms a gel-like substance within 30 seconds, significantly reducing odor diffusion. Their core advantages include small size (each bag weighs approximately 50-100 grams) and no need for additional disposal, making them particularly suitable for hikers and backpackers or as emergency reserves. However, it is important to choose biodegradable products that meet environmental standards.

3. Simple Pit Toilets
Suitable for wilderness areas where primitive camping is allowed, following the LNT (Leave No Trace) principles: choose a location at least 60 meters away from water sources and campsites, dig a cat hole 20-30 centimeters deep, and cover it with soil and leaves after use. Key operational points include clearing surface vegetation before use to avoid ecological damage; thoroughly burying waste and restoring the terrain to its original state after use; and prohibiting use in rocky areas or high-altitude permafrost zones to prevent water source contamination.

4. Small Folding Toilets
Combining the comfort of portable toilets with the convenience of collection bags, these toilets typically feature an aluminum alloy frame and a detachable seat structure, with a height of approximately 40-50 centimeters when unfolded. The accompanying biodegradable bags contain enzymes that accelerate waste decomposition and inhibit odors. This solution is suitable for backpack camping scenarios but requires regular replacement of collection bags and has a higher per-use cost than disposable emergency bags.

5. Large-Scale Mobile Toilets
For fixed venues such as camping bases, 9-stall mobile toilets adopt a modular design equipped with septic tanks and ventilation systems, capable of meeting the usage needs of 20-30 people per hour. Some high-end models also include sinks, lighting equipment, and dedicated stalls for the disabled. These facilities require prior planning for water and electricity access and regular cleaning and transportation by dedicated personnel, making them suitable for long-term operational camping sites.
