Mobile Toilets at Tiananmen Square, Beijing

Admin October 10, 2026

The mobile toilets in the Tiananmen Square area of Beijing are mainly tent-style temporary toilets, featuring seasonal setup, upgrades and renovations, facility optimization, and odor control.

Setup Situation

The tent-style temporary toilets in the Tiananmen Square area primarily operate during peak tourist seasons. From March to November each year, to accommodate the increase in tourist numbers, tent-style temporary toilets are erected in the Tiananmen Square area, providing round-the-clock services. Additional toilets are also set up during specific major events. For example, during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War on September 3, 2025, tent-style toilets were installed in high-traffic areas such as the east side of the Great Hall of the People and the west side of the National Museum of China. In 2026, tent toilets will be set up on the east side road of Tiananmen Square with no fewer than 165 toilet stalls, and on the west side road and the south side of the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall with no fewer than 30 toilet stalls at each of the two mobile toilet locations, totaling no fewer than 195 toilet stalls. The service period will be from March 20, 2026, to November 15, 2026 (specific times as required by the purchaser).

Upgrades and Renovations

In 2026, Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group's Urban Street Sweeping Company will conduct a comprehensive upgrade of the tent-style toilets in the Tiananmen Square area. New accessible toilets will be added, enhancing privacy protection and improving odor control. After the upgrade and renovation, the tent-style temporary toilets, except for the flame-retardant tent soft materials, will all use stainless steel and aluminum alloy materials. The width of the external wall panels will be adjusted from 1 meter to 2 meters, and diamond mesh screens will be added at the junctions between the wall panels and the tent roof, improving the durability and ventilation of the toilets.

Facility Configuration

The five tent-style temporary toilets are equipped with a total of 142 squatting stalls, 5 accessible stalls, and 128 urinal stalls. The height of the squatting stall partitions has been increased from 1.1 meters to 1.8 meters, and independent partitions have been added to the urinal troughs. Each toilet stall is newly equipped with handrails, coat hooks, storage shelves, and other convenience facilities, and an occupied/unoccupied status indicator is installed at the entrance. The accessible toilets are equipped with toilets, safety handrails, tissue boxes, SOS alarm buttons, etc., greatly enhancing usability and safety.

Odor Control

The floor platforms have been redesigned from independent platforms to long platforms shared by six toilet stalls, integrating ceramic toilets with water traps. Sealing rings have been added to the opening positions of the sewage trough covers. Axial flow fans are installed at the top of the tent toilets, and silent small exhaust fans are added at the bottom of the squatting stalls, effectively improving the air quality inside the toilets.
