Alternatives to Air Conditioning for Container Houses

Admin September 17, 2026

When it is inconvenient to install traditional air conditioning in container houses, alternatives such as portable air conditioners, water-cooled air conditioners without external units, mobile environmental air conditioners, air circulation fans + fan combinations, or physical cooling aids can be considered.

  1. Portable Air Conditioners
Portable air conditioners do not require external unit installation, making them suitable for container houses where drilling holes is not possible. They can provide a cooling capacity of up to 4000W, with an outlet air temperature difference of 8-12℃, and can significantly cool a room of less than 20㎡ in about 20 minutes. Split-type portable air conditioners offer more stable performance and lower noise levels (45-50dB), but it is important to ensure proper sealing of the exhaust hose to prevent hot air from flowing back and affecting cooling efficiency.

  2. Water-Cooled Air Conditioners Without External Units
If the budget allows, water-cooled air conditioners without external units are an ideal choice. They use water as the cooling medium, offering high heat dissipation efficiency and a cooling effect that is less affected by ambient temperature. They generally operate with noise levels below 40 decibels, making them suitable for scenarios requiring quiet operation. Their feature of not requiring external unit installation also perfectly fits the space constraints of container houses.

  3. Mobile Environmental Air Conditioners (Cooling Fans/Air Coolers)
These devices use the principle of water evaporation to absorb heat for cooling. They do not require installation, are plug-and-play, and consume low electricity. They can reduce the temperature by 3-5℃ in dry environments, but their effectiveness is limited in high-humidity weather. They are more suitable for open spaces or localized cooling. Their portability and low energy consumption make them the preferred choice for temporary or low-cost scenarios.

  4. Air Circulation Fans + Fan Combinations
When the budget is limited, body temperature cooling can be achieved by accelerating air circulation. Used alone with window ventilation, they can reduce the temperature by 3-5℃. When used in combination with air conditioners, they can also save 30% on electricity bills. This solution is cost-effective and highly flexible, but its cooling effect is greatly influenced by environmental ventilation conditions.

  5. Physical Cooling Aids
Ice pads and ice pillows can provide localized cooling and are suitable for short-term use. Sunshades and insulating window films can block direct sunlight, reducing indoor temperature by 3-4℃, and long-term use can reduce heat accumulation. These items are low-cost and easy to install, but they work best when used in combination with other cooling methods.
