Two-Story Shipping Container House
Quản trị 17 tháng 9, 2026
A two-story shipping container house is a habitable or usable architectural form that is formed by modifying, assembling, and reinforcing standard shipping containers as basic units, achieving second-floor space expansion through vertical stacking of containers or a frame structure.

Core Structure and Modification Points
- Basic Units: International standard 20-foot or 40-foot shipping containers are used. The steel-structured container bodies have high strength and can withstand stacking pressure. The original containers need to be modified by adding windows and doors, laying thermal insulation layers (such as rock wool or polyurethane foam), installing electrical and plumbing systems, and decorating interior walls and floors to make them suitable for residential or commercial use.
- Second-Floor Construction Methods:
- Direct Stacking: One container is vertically stacked on top of another, connected by corner fittings locking or welding, with internal stairs for access. This method is simple in construction but has lower flexibility.
- Frame Structure: Container modules are fixed on a second-floor steel frame platform, allowing for more flexible layouts and adaptability to complex terrains or functional requirements.
Main Features
- Modularity and Portability: Containers serve as standard modules, facilitating factory prefabrication, quick transportation, and on-site hoisting. The convenience of moving the entire structure or disassembling it for relocation is superior to that of traditional buildings.
- Short Construction Period: Most of the processing is completed in the factory, and only foundation construction and hoisting and assembly are required on-site, resulting in a significantly faster overall construction speed compared to traditional buildings.
- Sturdy and Durable Structure: The steel main structure can withstand strong wind loads. Proper anti-corrosion treatment (such as using salt-resistant coatings in coastal areas) can extend the service life to more than 25 years.
- Efficient Space Utilization: The second-floor design doubles the floor area ratio, providing more usable space within the same footprint, suitable for high-density demand scenarios.
Regional Adaptability Considerations (Taking Dandong as an Example)
- Climate Adaptability:
- In cold winters, efficient thermal insulation layers need to be added, and windows and doors should use double-glazed glass. In rainy summers, systematic waterproofing treatment is required for the second-floor roof and the gaps at connections.
- In coastal areas with high humidity and salt content, strict anti-corrosion treatment of the container steel is required, and a moisture-proof isolation layer should be set at the bottom of the building.
- Foundation and Base: Concrete strip foundations or independent column foundations should be poured according to soil conditions to prevent uneven settlement and ensure building stability.
Application Scenarios and Expandability
In addition to accommodation, two-story shipping container houses can also be transformed into functional spaces such as cafes, restaurants, and shops. For example, six containers can be used to build a super-luxury two-story villa for self-sufficient living. In disaster scenarios, they can serve as modular temporary shelters, quickly deployed to provide basic living guarantees.
