Standard Container House Size Dimensions: What to Know

Quản trị 29 tháng 10, 2026

The dimensions of standard container houses are primarily based on standard container specifications. Common sizes and key information are as follows:

1. 20-foot container
The external dimensions are approximately 6058 mm (20 feet) in length, 2438 mm (8 feet) in width, and 2591 mm (8.5 feet) in height, with an internal volume of about 33 cubic meters. Its length serves as the basic unit for container houses, while its width and height conform to the universal standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), facilitating combination with containers of other sizes or standalone use. The internal space can meet the living needs of a single person or a small family and is commonly used for temporary housing, offices, or small commercial spaces.

2. 40-foot container
The length doubles to approximately 12192 mm (40 feet), with the same width as the 20-foot container (2438 mm) and an internal volume of about 67 cubic meters. Its larger space can accommodate more functional areas, such as bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, making it suitable for multiple occupants or as a multifunctional composite space. Due to the increased length, structural stability needs to be ensured through reinforced design, and it is commonly used in long-term residential container house projects.

3. 40-foot high-cube container
Based on the standard 40-foot container, the height is increased by 30 cm to 2896 mm (9.5 feet), with an additional internal volume increase of about 9 cubic meters, totaling 76 cubic meters. The higher internal space enhances living comfort and allows for the installation of mezzanines or high-ceiling designs to increase usable area. Such containers are suitable for scenarios with high ceiling height requirements, such as art studios, libraries, or commercial spaces requiring vertical layouts.

4. The core purpose of standardized design
All standard containers have a uniform width of 2438 mm, a design aimed at reducing global freight costs and ensuring compatibility. The uniform width enables seamless stacking, transportation, and loading/unloading of containers, reducing additional operational costs caused by size discrepancies. In house renovations, standardized dimensions facilitate modular design, allowing for space expansion through the combination of containers of different sizes while reducing material and construction costs.
