Small Container Transformed into a House

Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026

It is feasible to transform a small container into a house, and there have been many successful cases. The following provides a detailed introduction from the aspects of transformation methods, costs, functional realization, and environmental protection:

I. Transformation Methods

  1. Structural Optimization: The traditional container has a large spacing between the longitudinal beams of the bottom frame, resulting in insufficient floor stiffness for direct habitation. By installing C-shaped steel purlins between the bottom beams, the load can be evenly distributed to the main beams, ensuring structural stability even when the container bodies are stacked up to three layers.
  2. Corrosion Protection: After shot blasting and rust removal on the container body surface, a zinc-rich primer and a polyurethane topcoat are applied. This protective system enables the steel to maintain an effective service life of over 15 years in environments with northwest wind and sand and temperature variations.
  3. Thermal Insulation: A broken-bridge lining structure is adopted, with hard polyurethane foam filled between the steel frame and the interior wall panels. Rubber thermal insulation pads are installed at the connections of the keels, reducing the heat exchange efficiency between the interior and exterior of the container by about 40%.

II. Costs

The transformation costs vary depending on factors such as the size of the container, the complexity of the transformation, and the selected materials. For example, there is a case where a 15㎡ mini home was transformed from a container at a cost of less than 110,000 yuan; there is also a case where a second-hand container was transformed for 13,000 yuan to create a "net-red cottage" for parents. On the market, the price of transforming a 40-foot shipping container into a mobile home is around 10,000 yuan, while the price of simple transformed houses such as construction site guard rooms ranges from 285 to 9,600 yuan.

III. Functional Realization

  1. Residential Function: By reasonably planning the interior space and setting up areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, daily living needs can be met. For example, a custom-made foldable bed can be used as a sofa during the day and a double bed at night; a linear kitchen saves space and is equipped with a large amount of storage space to ensure cleanliness and convenience.
  2. Water and Electricity Facilities: Sewage collection tanks and gravity separators can be installed to treat gray water and black water, achieving self-circulation of water resources; black water can be converted into liquid fertilizer by adding microbial inoculants. At the same time, solar panels can be installed to solve the electricity problem.

IV. Environmental Protection

  1. Material Recycling: Each standard 20-foot container consumes about 1.2 tons of steel, and the carbon emissions of a one-time poured concrete temporary house of the same area are 2.3 times that of a container house. Moreover, the container house can be hoisted as a whole to a new site, with the disassembly and assembly loss rate controlled within 5%, significantly reducing the generation of construction waste.
