Self-made Container House Small Room

Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026

When building a self-made container house, it is necessary to comprehensively consider design, construction, approval, and maintenance. The key points are as follows:

1. Preliminary Planning and Approval It is essential to clarify the land nature (such as homestead, forest land, cultivated land, etc.), as different land types have different approval processes. For example, for rural homesteads, it is necessary to follow local requirements to handle the approval for house construction and provide structural drawings. Construction on cultivated land and basic farmland is strictly prohibited. Leased land is mostly for temporary buildings, and the contract should clearly specify the nature of use. Unauthorized construction without approval may be identified as illegal construction.

2. Container Selection and Renovation

  • Selection: It is advisable to choose containers with thermal insulation layers first, which can reduce the difficulty of later renovation. Used containers should be checked for rust. The cutting and welding areas should be polished and coated with epoxy primer + topcoat for rust prevention.
  • Spatial Layout: For small units (such as 15 square meters), it is recommended to use foldable beds, foldable tables, and integrated cabinets to enhance spatial flexibility. Multiple containers can be spliced to expand functional areas (such as living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms).
  • Lighting and Thermal Insulation: Install large floor-to-ceiling windows and roof skylights to improve lighting. Add internal thermal insulation layers to the walls/roofs, and choose triple-glazed windows to enhance heat insulation. Roof eaves or sunshades can prevent excessive sun exposure in summer.

3. Construction and Safety

  • Foundation Treatment: The container should be elevated on pile foundations to prevent moisture and pests and facilitate site leveling.
  • Waterproof Sealing: The areas around doors and windows, container body joints, and roof gutters should be sealed with sealant, which should be replaced every 5-7 years. Clean the roof leaves every year to prevent water accumulation.
  • Fire Protection Design: Fire-resistant materials should be used in areas such as bedrooms and living rooms, such as decorating the walls with special black materials, and equipping with stoves or electric heaters.

4. Post-maintenance

  • Rust Prevention and Corrosion Resistance: Check the welds, corners, bottoms, and other rust-prone areas every year. If rust spots are found, polish and repaint them immediately. In inland dry areas, apply anti-corrosion paint every 8-12 years, in southern humid areas every 7-10 years, and in coastal areas every 3-5 years.
  • Condensation Prevention: Avoid placing the container body directly on the ground and elevate the foundation. Install dehumidification equipment or a ventilation system inside.

5. Cost and Style

  • Cost: The renovation cost of a single container is approximately 10,000 to 110,000 yuan, depending on materials, design complexity, and functional requirements.
  • Style: The exterior facade can be treated with paint spraying, theme painting, cladding, or glass curtain walls to get rid of the industrial feel. The interior can be customized in industrial, ins, minimalist, and other styles.
