What Structure Type is a Prefabricated Panel House?

Prefabricated panel houses are usually of brick-concrete structure, but they can also be used in frame structures.

Prefabricated Panel Houses in Brick-Concrete Structures

Among common building structure types, most prefabricated panel houses belong to brick-concrete structures. In a brick-concrete structure, brick walls serve as the main load-bearing walls, while prefabricated concrete panels are used as floor slabs. During construction, the prefabricated panels are typically installed first, followed by the brick wall construction. This structural form was widely used in early residential buildings. Its advantages lie in relatively simple construction and lower costs. Brick walls can provide good vertical load-bearing capacity, and the prefabricated panels can quickly create horizontal partitions between floors to meet living and other functional requirements. However, there are also some limitations to prefabricated panel houses in brick-concrete structures. Due to the relatively loose connection between the brick walls and the prefabricated panels, old-style prefabricated panel houses have many joints, resulting in poor overall integrity of the buildings. When subjected to external forces such as earthquakes, relative displacements are likely to occur between the brick walls and the prefabricated panels, thereby affecting the structural safety of the houses.

Prefabricated Panel Houses in Frame Structures

In addition to brick-concrete structures, prefabricated panels can also be used in frame structures. A frame structure mainly relies on a framework composed of beams and columns to bear vertical and horizontal loads, with the prefabricated panels laid as floor slabs on the frame beams. In this structural system, the frame provides the main structural support, and the prefabricated panels mainly serve to separate the floor spaces. Compared with prefabricated panel houses in brick-concrete structures, those in frame structures have relatively better overall integrity because the frame beams and columns are connected by reinforced concrete, forming a relatively complete load-bearing system. Moreover, the spatial layout of frame structures is more flexible, able to meet different building functional requirements. However, the construction of frame structures is relatively complex and costly, requiring professional construction techniques and equipment.
