North Korea Prefabricated Housing

Quản trị 17 tháng 9, 2026

North Korea has practices related to prefabricated housing and has developed residential forms with its own characteristics.

During the Korean War, many cities in North Korea suffered severe damage. In the subsequent reconstruction process, North Korea adopted prefabricated panel technology earlier than other East Asian regions. This technology was introduced with assistance from East Germany, and it also adopted the Soviet concept of neighborhood planning.

North Korea has residential forms similar to Khrushchyovka buildings, which have distinct features of prefabricated panel structures. From an architectural perspective, they are usually multi-story panel buildings constructed rapidly using prefabricated components. This construction method can significantly shorten the construction period, improve construction efficiency, and meet the urgent housing needs during North Korea's post-war reconstruction. The unit sizes are mainly small to medium, with a compact functional layout. Within the limited space, various functional areas required for living, such as bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, are arranged as reasonably as possible to adapt to different family structures and living needs.

These residential buildings in North Korea are similar in architectural form to Soviet Khrushchyovka buildings, but there are significant differences in the housing allocation system compared to the original Soviet design. In the Soviet Union, the allocation of Khrushchyovka buildings was mainly based on basic factors such as family size. In North Korea, however, housing allocation is divided according to individual conditions and ranks. For example, unmarried individuals usually live in dormitories. This form of residence is conducive to the unified management of unmarried young people and the organization of collective activities. Married individuals are allocated suites based on family structure, with family size and structural characteristics being important considerations for suite allocation. In addition, factors such as professional contributions and social status also affect housing standards. Those who have made outstanding contributions to the country and society and have a high social status are often allocated larger and better-equipped housing.
