Melbourne Container House

Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026

Melbourne container houses are characterized by creative design, flexible layout, and sustainability, achieving low-cost and high-efficiency residential solutions through modular renovation.

I. Design Features

Melbourne container houses break away from traditional architectural forms, adopting modular stacking and split-level designs. For example, one case stacked three containers in a split-level manner, creating two floors of space that not only expanded the living area but also created walkways through the gaps, avoiding a sense of enclosure. Some designs retain the original industrial appearance of the containers, such as the steel structures of ceilings and walls, while incorporating high-strength glass walls to ensure bright and transparent interiors and enhance interaction with nature. Additionally, creative elements like roof openings for introducing trees and freely openable walls bring vitality and flexibility to the buildings.

II. Spatial Layout

The interior space uses white as a base, paired with dark wooden strips or travertine and other materials, creating a simple and transparent visual effect. The functional areas are flexibly divided with an open layout: the dining and kitchen areas are integrated with the living area, and spaces are divided by sculptural fireplaces or soft furniture partitions, maintaining connection while avoiding clutter. The bedrooms are located on the second floor, taking advantage of the height of the containers to create excellent views, using natural landscapes instead of elaborate decorations. The stairs are made of perforated metal plates, balancing safety and lighting, allowing sunlight to penetrate through each floor.

III. Sustainability

Container houses focus on environmental protection and efficient resource utilization. Structurally, they retain the durability of containers, reducing construction waste; during the renovation process, spray foam insulation materials are used to lower energy consumption (although the environmental friendliness of some materials needs improvement). Some cases integrate solar power systems to achieve energy self-sufficiency, reducing operating costs by 70%. Additionally, the modular structure supports rapid deployment and flexible relocation, making it suitable for post-disaster reconstruction, scenic areas, and other scenarios, extending the building's lifecycle.

IV. Application Scenarios

Melbourne container houses are not only used for residential purposes but also expanded to commercial and public sectors. For example, a convenience store at Chongqing North Railway Station was built using containers in just 24 hours, serving over ten thousand people daily; the Melbourne Harbor New District project combined containers with brick, stone, and metal materials to create a benchmark for rental housing. Their low-cost and customizable features provide affordable housing options for the middle class, first-time homebuyers, and remote areas.
