How to Make a Container House by Yourself
Quản trị 17 tháng 9, 2026
The DIY transformation of container houses can be achieved through two methods: transforming old or second-hand containers or creating creative models, depending on the intended use and strict adherence to safety regulations.

I. Transformation of Old/Second-Hand Containers (for Residential Use)
Foundation Reinforcement and Structural Treatment
- Iron Sheet Reinforcement: Wrap a metal mesh around the exterior of the container as a base, and apply concrete overall to enhance the structural stability of the iron sheet. If the floor needs to be replaced, use an electric drill to remove the original wooden floor, cut it, and reinstall it. Add insulation cotton to the floor layer and fill the gaps with expanding foam to improve insulation performance.
- Load-Bearing and Corrosion Inspection: Before transformation, confirm the load-bearing capacity of the container (e.g., a standard 20-foot container has a load capacity of approximately 20-30 tons) and the integrity of the anti-corrosion coating. If the coating is damaged, reapply anti-rust paint.
Flooring and Water and Electricity Systems
- Floor Hardening: Lay a waterproof tarpaulin, surround it with red bricks, and pour concrete. Stir cement mortar to smooth the surface, ensuring the floor is flat and moisture-proof.
- Water and Electricity Installation: Plan the water and electricity lines according to needs. It is recommended to use concealed wire channels to hide the pipelines for aesthetic purposes. If a bathroom or kitchen needs to be installed, reserve drainage pipe positions in advance.
Structural Expansion and Functional Optimization
- Space Expansion: Increase the usable area by building a full-house light steel frame and install glass doors and windows to improve lighting and ventilation.
- Detail Design: Use wooden boards to fix sliding rails to make movable doors, or use waste materials (such as metal sheets) to make water baffles, storage shelves, and other components.
II. Creative Model Making (for Non-Residential Use)
- Material Selection: Use cardboard, foam board, or lightweight wood to build a mini container house, achieving a multi-room structure through layered design (e.g., a two-story layout).
- Functional Simulation: Add elements such as openable doors and windows and simple furniture to the model, suitable for children's education or creative display scenarios.
Precautions
- Skill Requirements: Physical transformation requires basic decoration skills (such as measurement, cutting, and water and electricity installation). For complex steps (such as welding and circuit connection), it is recommended to seek professional assistance.
- Compliance: Before transformation, consult the local construction department to confirm whether a construction permit is required and comply with safety regulations such as fire protection and earthquake resistance.
- Environmental Protection and Safety: When handling old containers, wear protective equipment (such as masks and gloves) to avoid inhaling rust or chemical coating residues.
The above plans are all based on actual transformation cases and can be flexibly adjusted according to budget, skill level, and intended use.
