How to Decorate a Container House Roof
There are various ways to decorate the roof of a container house, and you can choose from options such as ordinary roof renovation, green roofs, or sloped roofs with terrace extensions based on your needs. Details are as follows:

I. Ordinary Roof Renovation
If the roof needs to support human activities or additional loads (such as a rooftop garden or viewing platform), its load-bearing capacity must be evaluated first. Structural reinforcement can be achieved by adding purlins (such as C-shaped steel or square steel tubes) to form a skeletal layer or by laying profiled steel sheets or OSB boards as the base layer. Waterproofing and insulation require layered treatment: for the waterproofing layer, select SBS modified bitumen membranes or polymer (PVC/TPO) membranes, ensuring tight adhesion or mechanical fastening; for the insulation layer, recommend extruded polystyrene boards (XPS, thickness ≥ 100mm) or rock wool boards (requiring waterproofing treatment), and use a 0.2mm thick polyethylene film as the vapor barrier. Construction steps are as follows: reinforce the structure → lay the vapor barrier → install the insulation layer → create a slope (2%-3% gradient) → lay the waterproofing layer → cover with surface materials (such as tiles or wooden boards).
II. Green Roof (Ecological Roof)
Structural support requires adding steel beams or wooden frames inside the container to transfer the weight to the corner columns; for larger-scale projects, an engineer must calculate the load-bearing capacity. Layered construction includes:
- A waterproofing membrane (such as EPDM) and a root barrier (to prevent plant roots from penetrating);
- A drainage layer (gravel or specialized mats) and a filter fabric (to prevent soil from clogging the drainage pipes);
- Lightweight soil (not ordinary garden soil) and cold-resistant, shallow-rooted plants (such as sedum succulents or local wildflowers).
Drainage design requires setting up drainage outlets or channels, and rainwater can be collected in water tanks for secondary use. Regular maintenance of the plants is necessary to prevent root damage to the waterproofing layer.
III. Sloped Roof and Terrace Extension
Referring to actual cases, for a sloped roof, first install baffles to secure the oak seeds, weld right-angle steel to the top of the iron container, complete the frame, and then lay wooden or metal boards; for a terrace extension, plan the foundation in advance, lay gravel, pour concrete, and install load-bearing columns.
Precautions
- The original design of an ordinary container roof is only intended to bear snow or maintenance loads. A structural safety assessment must be conducted before renovation.
- Regular maintenance of plants is required for green roofs to prevent root damage to the waterproofing layer.
- Construction must comply with local building codes, especially regarding the live load design for roofs accessible to people (usually designed for 2.0-3.0 kN/m²).
