How Container Houses Prevent Lightning

Quản trị 16 tháng 9, 2026

The key to preventing lightning strikes on container houses lies in ensuring that the metal box forms a Faraday cage effect and is well grounded, while additional lightning protection devices can also be installed. Specific measures are as follows:

Ensure the metal box forms a Faraday cage effect and is grounded

According to Michael Faraday's theory, metal box-shaped buildings are relatively safe during thunderstorms. When lightning strikes a container house, the charge will flow evenly along the surface of the metal box without passing through the interior, thereby protecting the people and items inside from lightning strikes. However, the prerequisite for this effect to take effect is that the container house must be well grounded, allowing the lightning current to be smoothly conducted into the ground. If not grounded, due to the high electrical conductivity of metal, it may be more likely to attract lightning and increase the possibility of being struck.

Install additional lightning protection devices

  • Lightning rods: A lightning rod can be installed on the top of the container house to attract lightning and conduct it underground, preventing direct lightning strikes on the house. The height of the lightning rod should be appropriate, generally higher than the highest point of the house by a certain distance. The material is usually galvanized round steel or steel pipe, which has good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance.
  • Lightning strips: Lightning strips are laid along the ridges, eaves, and other parts of the house that are prone to lightning strikes to intercept lightning and conduct it underground. Lightning strips can be flat steel or round steel. The thickness of flat steel is generally not less than 4mm, and the cross-sectional area is not less than 48mm²; the diameter of round steel is not less than 8mm. They are fixed to the building with supports, and the spacing between supports is generally 1 - 1.5 meters.

Ensure indoor insulation and equipotential bonding

Insulating materials are used indoors in container houses to reduce the risk of electric shock. At the same time, effectively use the building structure to be welded into a network, and carry out cage shielding and equipotential bonding to provide a basic condition for electrical and electronic equipment to prevent damage from lightning electromagnetic pulses (LEMP).
