Underground House Built with Four Containers

Quản trị 17 tháng 9, 2026

It is feasible to build an underground house using four containers, but strict adherence to professional design specifications is required. Here are the specific implementation points:

1. Space Design and Layout
The standard dimensions of a container are 6 meters/12 meters in length, 2.4 meters in width, and 2.6 meters in height. The excavation depth underground should be 0.5 meters more than the height of the container (i.e., at least 3.1 meters) to reserve space for construction operations. For example, the Westmont project in Illinois, USA, adopts a tiered design: two 40-foot (approximately 12.2-meter) containers serve as the upper main structure, a 20-foot (approximately 6.1-meter) container is placed on a lower platform, and the smallest container acts as a connecting structure. Through this staggered layout, visual unity and functional zoning are achieved. This design not only ensures structural stability but also expands vertical space utilization through the combination of containers of different heights.

2. Structural Reinforcement and Load-Bearing
Key reinforcements are required for the container body before burial underground:

  • Corner Strengthening: Weld reinforcing bars at the four corners of the container body to enhance overall resistance to deformation;
  • Top Protection: Lay a 10-centimeter-thick reinforced concrete slab to disperse the pressure from the overlying soil layer and prevent depression of the container top;
  • Foundation Treatment: Pour a concrete base underground to ensure the container body is isolated from the soil, preventing metal fatigue caused by long-term pressure.

3. Waterproof and Moisture-Proof System
A triple protection and intelligent control system is adopted:

  • Coating and Membrane: First, apply asphalt waterproof coating on both the inside and outside of the container body, and then lay high-strength waterproof membrane in the middle to form a double barrier;
  • Concrete Protective Layer: Pour a 30-centimeter-thick concrete layer on the outermost side to resist groundwater infiltration;
  • Humidity Control: Install a dehumidifier with a humidity sensor that automatically activates when the humidity exceeds 65%. Two ventilation openings with a diameter of 30 centimeters are reserved at the top, one connected to an exhaust fan for forced dehumidification and the other equipped with louvers to introduce dry air, forming a convection cycle. After treatment, the indoor humidity can be stably controlled at 50%-55%, which is 30% drier than that of an ordinary basement.

4. Access and Safety Design

  • Door Opening Cutting: Cut a 1.2-meter by 2-meter door opening on the side of the container body, with dimensions that balance personnel passage and structural strength;
  • Vertical Transportation: A spiral staircase (saving space) or a hydraulic lifting platform (facilitating the handling of heavy objects) is recommended, ensuring that the load-bearing capacity meets design requirements;
  • Emergency Exit: According to building codes, a backup escape opening or a safety ladder connecting to the ground surface must be provided.

5. Functional Customization and Expansion
The modular nature of the container basement supports diverse modifications, such as:

  • Audio-Visual Entertainment Room: Create a professional-grade audio-visual environment through soundproofing materials and acoustic panels;
  • Safe Haven: Adopt blast-proof doors and windows and an independent ventilation system to meet emergency shelter needs;
  • Secret Workshop: Combine concealed door design and concealed ventilation openings to achieve a high degree of privacy.

Precautions: Geological surveys must be conducted before construction to ensure that the soil bearing capacity meets requirements. All modifications must comply with local building codes and be carried out by professional teams.
