Methods for Training Dogs to Use Portable Toilets

The methods for training dogs to use portable toilets are as follows:

Guide Using Scent Localization

First, mop the portable toilet area. Then, use a cloth soaked in disinfectant and toilet water to wipe the area again, paying special attention to cleaning the corners thoroughly. After that, spray the area with a deodorizer to ensure that only the portable toilet has the smell of feces and urine. Dogs mainly rely on their sense of smell to find a place to relieve themselves. After this treatment, they can go to the portable toilet on their own by following the scent.

Guide with Pee Pads

At the beginning of training, put the dog's feces and urine on the pee pad and let the dog smell its excretions. Take the dog to the side of the pee pad multiple times to smell it. After a period of guidance, the dog will gradually develop the habit of going to the pee pad to relieve itself.

Use a Restriction Pen to Narrow the Range

Reduce the dog's activity area. Initially, place several pee pads in the activity area. As the training progresses, gradually reduce the number of pee pads until only one remains. Through this process, the dog will relieve itself at the designated spot.

Choose the Right Tools and Define Areas

  • Choose the right 'toilet' type: For puppies or dogs kept indoors, prioritize using a 'dog toilet + pee pad'. It is recommended to use a dog toilet with a fence, and choose pee pads with attractants. Initially, you can stick 3 - 4 pee pads around the toilet to expand the area.
  • Define 'prohibited areas' and 'allowed areas': Use a fence to enclose 'prohibited areas' such as the living room sofa and bedroom bed, limiting the dog's activity area to only the 'toilet area + rest area'. For puppies, the time they are let out should not exceed 30 minutes each time. Spray odorless white vinegar in the toilet area, and avoid using things with pungent odors like toilet water.

Seize the 'Golden Opportunity' and Provide Positive Reinforcement

  • Observe defecation signals: Dogs usually have specific actions before defecating, such as lowering their heads to smell the ground, circling, suddenly stopping still, or raising their buttocks slightly. Once you notice these signals, immediately say 'go to the toilet' in a calm tone and gently carry the dog to the dog toilet.
  • Wait and reward: After placing the dog in the toilet, stand about 1 meter away and wait quietly. If the dog does not respond within 3 minutes, you can sprinkle a small amount of snack crumbs on the pee pad to induce it. Once the dog finishes defecating, immediately give it its favorite snack and praise it exaggeratedly.
  • Set fixed training times: Train the dog at fixed times every day, specifically 15 minutes after meals, after waking up, and after strenuous exercise.
