Transforming a Container into a Thatched-Roof House
Quản trị 17 tháng 9, 2026
Transforming a container into a thatched-roof house requires addressing three key aspects: structural reinforcement, waterproofing and thermal insulation, and aesthetic design. Below are the specific steps and material recommendations:

I. Foundation Modification
- Structural Reinforcement: After cutting openings for doors and windows in the container, the edges should be reinforced with channel steel to prevent deformation due to uneven stress distribution. The channel steel should be firmly welded to the container's original frame to form an integrated support structure.
- Ground Moisture Prevention: First, lay a moisture-proof membrane to block underground moisture. Then, elevate the floor joists by 5-10cm (using anti-corrosion wood or galvanized steel is recommended). Finally, lay anti-corrosion wooden flooring. The spacing between joists should be controlled at 30-40cm to ensure floor stability.
II. Roof Treatment
- Frame Construction: Use light steel joists to construct a sloped roof frame with an angle of 30°-45°, depending on local rainfall requirements (45° or more is recommended for rainy areas). The frame should be welded securely to the top of the container, with additional horizontal supports to prevent deformation.
- Thatch Laying:
- Material Selection: Artificial synthetic thatch (with a fire rating of B1) or naturally treated palm leaves that have been防腐 (anti-corrosion) processed. Synthetic thatch has stronger weather resistance, while natural thatch requires regular replacement (approximately every 5-8 years).
- Laying Method: Lay the thatch in overlapping layers from the eaves upwards, with each layer overlapping by at least 10cm. Each square meter requires 3-5 bundles. The ridge should be secured with steel wire to prevent it from being blown away by the wind.
III. Wall Decoration
- Thermal Insulation Layer: Attach a 2cm-thick XPS insulation board (with a thermal conductivity of ≤0.03W/m·K) to the inside of the wall. The outside can be covered with bamboo weaving or reed mats to enhance thermal insulation and match the thatched-roof style.
- Waterproofing Treatment: A waterproof membrane (such as SBS modified bitumen membrane) should be laid beneath the thatch layer, with the seams sealed with polyurethane sealant to prevent rainwater from penetrating the container wall.
IV. Detail Optimization
- Door and Window Design: Choose antique-style wooden louvered windows. The connection between the window frame and the wall should be sealed with waterproof glue, and the louver angle can be adjusted to control ventilation and lighting.
- Metal Treatment: The original metal parts of the container (such as corner fittings and corrugated sheets) should first be painted with anti-rust paint, then coated with yellow mud or straw paint to simulate the earthy yellow appearance of a traditional thatched-roof house.
Budget Reference: The transformation of a 20-foot container costs approximately 20,000-30,000 yuan, with the thatched roof (labor and materials) accounting for about 40% of the total. If natural thatch is used, an additional 10%-15% should be reserved for maintenance costs. After transformation, regular inspections of the roof fasteners and waterproof layer are necessary to ensure structural safety.
