Container Thai-Style House
Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026
Container Thai-style houses are vacation living spaces designed primarily with containers as the structural material, incorporating local climate and cultural characteristics of Thailand. They feature modularity, environmental friendliness, and strong adaptability.

I. Design Background and Requirements
In some remote rural areas of Thailand, such as Nakhon Nayok, which is a two-hour drive from Bangkok, there are issues with transporting building materials and a lack of skilled contractors and construction workers. To meet the demand for constructing vacation rental houses in the area, architect Tung Jai Ork Baab creatively used containers as the main building material to design unique Thai-style container vacation houses.
II. Structural Features
- Modular Combination: Typically, 20-foot containers are used for combination. For example, two containers are connected to create a main public lounge, an open-air courtyard is accommodated by another container, and the top-level container serves as a private bedroom.
- A-Frame Roof: To address tropical climates and heat transfer issues in containers, an A-frame roof structure is adopted. The top is made of metal for heat insulation and rain protection, the middle part has a translucent design to provide ample natural light, and the lower part features steel plate shutters to block rainwater and strong light while maintaining ventilation.
III. Spatial Layout
- Public Areas: The main public lounge connects two containers, with full-length floor-to-ceiling windows at both ends. The original loading doors provide shelter during storms. The open-air courtyard connects the living room, dining area, and storage room, forming a semi-outdoor space.
- Private Areas: The top-level container serves as a private bedroom, with a tall A-frame forming a balcony and open-air lounge area. The private bedroom is surrounded by panoramic glass windows on three sides, offering a broad view of the outdoors.
- Outdoor Spaces: There are outdoor cooking areas, in-ground swimming pools, wooden playgrounds, and sandbox structures to meet family vacation needs.
IV. Adaptability and Environmental Friendliness
- Terrain Adaptation: The project is located in a low-lying swampy area of empty rice paddies. The architect first excavated a small reservoir, used the soil to create high ground, and built the houses on elevated embankments to prevent flooding.
- Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency: Container houses reduce the demand for traditional building materials and lower the environmental impact. Meanwhile, the roof design, steel plate shutters, and other structures help maintain indoor ventilation and natural light, reducing energy consumption.
