Container Ship Renovated House
Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026
The essence of renovating a container ship into a house is to use shipping containers as the main structural components of the house for transformation. This renovation method has numerous characteristics and advantages, and there have been many successful cases.

Renovation Methods and Characteristics
- Structural Foundation: Using shipping containers as the basic units, they inherently possess strong structural strength and good waterproof and windproof properties. During renovation, their sturdy steel frames are retained as the supporting structure of the house.
- Spatial Design: The internal space of the containers is re-planned according to needs. Customization is possible, such as changing the positions of doors and windows on the containers, adding sliding doors and windows to optimize natural light and ventilation; loft effects can also be achieved through stacking and combining containers to expand usable space.
- Functional Completion: Water and electricity pipelines are laid inside the containers, and waterproofing for bathrooms is carried out. Sanitary facilities, cabinets, wardrobes, etc., are installed to integrate various living functions. Some renovations also incorporate eco-friendly features, such as installing solar panels, rainwater collection systems, and green roofs.
Advantages
- Lower Cost: The cost of a 40-foot container is usually much lower than that of traditional building materials with similar square footage, and the overall renovation cost is relatively low, making house construction more affordable for more people.
- Efficient Construction: Most of the construction processes are completed on factory assembly lines, and then transported to the site for assembly, similar to building with building blocks, greatly reducing the construction period.
- Flexible and Movable: With inherent modular characteristics, it allows for future expansion or reconfiguration. It can also be repeatedly disassembled and relocated to different sites, adapting to different usage scenarios and changing needs.
- Eco-friendly and Sustainable: Using recyclable containers reduces the use of building materials; some adopt eco-friendly materials and energy-saving designs, reducing the impact on the environment.
Successful Cases
- A family of four in Belgium renovated a 48㎡ shipping container into a temporary home, doing the kitchen and bathroom layouts themselves.
- A family of four in a small town in Jiangsu built a house on the original foundation using an insulated container, planning the space reasonably and living comfortably.
- A couple abroad renovated a 15㎡ container into a 'mini villa', equipped with a transformable open design and solar panels, spending less than 110,000 yuan.
