Container Old House Renovation Design
Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026
The renovation design of container old houses requires comprehensive consideration of functionality, cost, structural safety, and compliance. Here are the key design points:

1. Clarify Renovation Goals and Budget
- Functional Positioning: Determine the purpose based on needs (such as residential, studio, homestay, etc.). Different functions have varying requirements for spatial layout, lighting, and ventilation. For example, a residential house needs to divide into bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, while a studio can simplify the zoning.
- Budget Control: Renovation costs are influenced by the number of containers, materials, and craftsmanship. For example, the basic renovation of a single standard container (3m×6m) costs approximately 13,000 to 110,000 yuan. If additional insulation layers, custom doors and windows, and interior decoration are added, the cost may be higher.
2. Structural Safety and Reinforcement
- Load-Bearing Inspection: Old containers may have rust or deformation, requiring professional inspection of roof load-bearing capacity, ground settlement, and column stability. For example, before 2005, the ground load capacity of warehouses was generally 3 tons/㎡. If heavy-duty shelves need to be placed, reinforcement to at least 5 tons/㎡ is required, costing about 80-150 yuan/㎡.
- Rust Prevention Treatment: The exterior walls of the container need to be sprayed with anti-rust paint, and the interior needs to be waterproofed to extend its service life.
3. Spatial Layout and Functional Optimization
- Modular Combination: Expand space by splicing or staggered stacking containers. For example, connecting two containers can create a flat-floor layout with an integrated living and dining area, two bedrooms, and a bathroom (about 100㎡). Staggered stacking can create a terrace or courtyard, improving ventilation and lighting.
- Multi-functional Furniture: For small units, it is recommended to use folding beds, folding tables, and integrated cabinets to enhance space flexibility. For example, a 15㎡ container can use a custom folding bed that serves as a sofa during the day and unfolds into a double bed at night.
4. Insulation and Lighting Design
- Insulation Layer: Install interior insulation layers (such as polystyrene boards, rock wool boards) on walls and roofs, and choose triple-glazed windows to improve thermal insulation performance, ensuring warmth in winter and coolness in summer.
- Natural Lighting: Install large floor-to-ceiling windows, roof skylights, or glass partitions to reduce reliance on artificial lighting. For example, a container cottage in the forest introduces natural light through a full glass wall design, creating a sense of transparency.
5. Compliance and Approval
- Procedure Handling: Before renovation, confirm the land nature (such as non-construction land needing to meet conditions like recyclability and high area utilization rate) and handle fire protection and planning approvals. For example, converting from warehousing to logistics requires re-determining the fire hazard category. Fire protection renovation accounts for 25%-35% of the total budget and must be applied for on behalf of others; otherwise, it cannot pass the acceptance inspection.
- Subsidy Application: Some regions provide special financial support for old house renovations. For example, Qingbaijiang District in Chengdu offers subsidies of up to 15%-20% of the renovation costs for logistics function upgrade projects.
