Container House Roof Renovation Design
The design of container house roof renovation needs to comprehensively consider lighting, ventilation, waterproofing, thermal insulation, and energy utilization. Common solutions include skylight design, lifting roof structures, integration of solar panels, and roof greening.

1. Skylight and Lifting Roof Design
Skylights are a core design element for enhancing indoor lighting. Fixed or operable glass skylights can be selected, paired with double-glazed units to improve thermal insulation. For example, in a Costa Rican case, roof skylights achieved full natural light coverage, and with triple-glazed windows, the indoor temperature in winter increased by 5-8℃. Lifting roof structures use hydraulic rods or electric mechanisms to adjust roof height, creating adaptable spaces. A 15㎡ container home in the forest employed a four-corner lifting rod design, ensuring efficient ventilation and enabling adjustable heights for shading or stargazing.
2. Solar System Integration
When installing solar panels on the roof, optimizing tilt angle and orientation is essential. In a typical case, 3-6 monocrystalline silicon solar panels (250-300W each) were installed on a single-story container roof, meeting basic electricity needs for air conditioning and refrigerators. If flexible solar films are used, they can conform to curved roofs, improving space utilization. In a South African expansion project, the solar system was connected to the grid, achieving 75% energy self-sufficiency.
3. Waterproofing and Thermal Insulation Treatment
Roof renovation should begin with rust removal, followed by the application of epoxy zinc-rich primer (thickness ≥ 80μm) and coverage with 2mm-thick polyurea waterproof coating. For thermal insulation, 50mm-thick polyurethane foam boards (thermal conductivity ≤ 0.024W/(m·K)) can be used, covered with aluminum foil reflective layers to reduce heat radiation. In the Costa Rican case, comprehensive roof and wall insulation kept indoor temperatures 10-12℃ lower than outdoors in summer.
4. Multi-functional Additional Structures
Detachable sunshades can be designed for the roof, using galvanized steel pipe frames with polycarbonate panels, providing 80% shading. For green roofs, drainage layers (expanded clay with thickness ≥ 100mm), filter layers (geotextiles), and lightweight planting media (bulk density ≤ 800kg/m³) are required. In the Chongming Island case in Shanghai, the roof garden planted shallow-rooted plants like Sedum lineare, reducing roof temperatures by 5-7℃ and creating an ecological landscape.
