Container Houses Need Lightning Protection

Quản trị 16 tháng 9, 2026

Container houses inherently possess some lightning protection capabilities, but for safety, it is still recommended to install professional lightning protection devices. Here is a detailed analysis:

I. Natural Lightning Protection Characteristics of Container Houses
The main body of a container house is made of steel structure, which forms a Faraday cage structure by connecting with the foundation through corner fittings. When struck by lightning, the current will be conducted along the steel structure into the ground, preventing the formation of potential differences indoors and thus reducing the risk of electric shock. Meanwhile, the interior is paved with insulating materials to further block current conduction. This structure provides container houses with basic protection capabilities during thunderstorms, preventing severe damage caused by direct lightning strikes.

II. Necessity of Professional Lightning Protection Devices
Although steel structures are conductive, the effectiveness of lightning protection is significantly influenced by the grounding system. Poor foundation connections or high soil resistivity may prevent the rapid dissipation of lightning current, increasing the risk of side flashes and induced lightning. Therefore, it is recommended to add lightning rods, lightning strips, or lightning protection nets in accordance with the 'Design Code for Protection of Structures against Lightning':

  1. Lightning Rods: Suitable for standalone container houses, guiding lightning current through the principle of point discharge;
  2. Lightning Strips: Installed along the roof edges to protect the roof from direct lightning strikes;
  3. Lightning Protection Nets: Covering the entire roof to form an equipotential ring and reduce potential differences.
    All devices must be reliably connected to the grounding electrode through galvanized flat steel or round steel, with a grounding resistance of ≤4Ω.

III. Key Points for Construction and Acceptance

  1. Material Selection: Lightning protection devices must be made of hot-dip galvanized steel with corrosion resistance meeting the requirements of GB/T 13912;
  2. Installation Specifications: The spacing between supports for lightning strips should be ≤1m, and ≤0.5m at turns; the height of lightning rods should be calculated to ensure the protection range covers the house;
  3. Acceptance Standards: According to the 'Quality Acceptance Standards for Construction of Container Houses', check the continuity and resistance value of the grounding system to ensure compliance with the requirements of GB 50057 'Design Code for Protection of Structures against Lightning'.

IV. Maintenance Recommendations
Regularly inspect the integrity of lightning protection devices, paying special attention to the corrosion of grounding electrodes and the reliability of connections. Conduct special inspections before the thunderstorm season to ensure the system is in an effective state.
