Lightning Protection Measures for Container Houses

Quản trị 15 tháng 9, 2026

The lightning protection measures for container houses mainly include utilizing their own structural characteristics, installing lightning rods or lightning strips, improving the grounding system, and taking internal lightning protection measures, etc. Details are as follows:

I. Utilizing Structural Characteristics
Container houses are connected to the foundation with steel structures, and their metal boxes themselves form a Faraday cage structure. When lightning strikes, the current will flow evenly along the metal shell and be conducted into the ground, preventing it from penetrating the box and causing harm to the interior. This passive protection mechanism provides basic safety in thunderstorms, but it is necessary to ensure that the steel structure connections are complete and well-grounded.

II. Installing Active Lightning Protection Devices

  1. Lightning Rods: Install lightning rods on the top of the container. They should be 1-2 meters higher than the highest point of the house. Galvanized round steel or steel pipes are used as materials to enhance conductivity and corrosion resistance.
  2. Lightning Strips: Lay flat steel or round steel lightning strips along the ridge, eaves, and other parts of the house that are prone to lightning strikes. The flat steel should have a thickness of not less than 4mm and a cross-sectional area of not less than 48mm², while the round steel should have a diameter of not less than 8mm. They are fixed with supports (at intervals of 1-1.5 meters) to form an interception net.

III. Improving the Grounding System

  1. Grounding Devices: Use angle steel or steel pipes to be vertically driven into the ground, or use the reinforcement in the building foundation to construct a grounding grid to ensure that the grounding resistance meets the regulatory requirements.
  2. Down Conductors: Use galvanized flat steel or round steel to reliably connect the lightning protection devices with the grounding devices, forming a current discharge path.
  3. Settlement Joint Treatment: At the deformation joints of the building, the lightning strip and the grounding busbar should have allowances and be bent into a semi-circle to prevent breakage due to structural deformation.

IV. Internal Lightning Protection Measures

  1. Equipotential Bonding: Connect the metal components and equipment enclosures inside the box into a unified potential using copper bars or flat steel to eliminate the risk of electric sparks caused by potential differences.
  2. Shielding Measures: Use metal shielding layers for sensitive electronic equipment and ensure that the shielding layers are grounded to reduce interference from lightning electromagnetic pulses.
  3. Surge Protective Devices (SPDs): Install SPDs in the distribution box to suppress lightning overvoltages and overcurrents and protect electrical equipment safety.
