Can Residential Toilets Be Moved?

Quản trị 08 tháng 10, 2026

Whether a residential toilet can be moved depends on specific circumstances and requires comprehensive consideration from both legal and technical feasibility perspectives.

I. Legal Regulation Aspect

  1. Conditions for Legal Renovation
If the relocation is within the reasonable renovation scope of the house, does not damage the main structure of the house (such as renovation in non-load-bearing wall areas), and complies with the "Residential Design Code" (GB 50096 - 2011) and property management regulations, it is generally not illegal. For example, incorporating an adjacent enclosed balcony with waterproofing capabilities into the bathroom requires ensuring connection with the original sewage pipes and verifying the waterproofing effect through a 48-hour closed water test.

  2. Illegal Renovation Scenarios

    • Damaging Structural Safety: Privately removing load-bearing walls for relocation or causing safety hazards to the entire building through renovation are illegal acts.
    • Violating Functional Zoning Regulations: According to the regulations, bathrooms should not be directly arranged above the bedrooms, living rooms (halls), kitchens, and dining rooms of lower-floor occupants; it is prohibited to convert rooms or balconies without waterproofing requirements into bathrooms. Illegal renovation may face fines ranging from 500 yuan to 10,000 yuan and require rework and rectification.
    • Unauthorized Renovation without Approval: If the relocation requires modifying the pipes on the lower floor, it must be approved by the property management and the lower-floor owner with their signatures; unauthorized relocation without approval from planning and other departments is also illegal.

II. Technical Feasibility Aspect

  1. Difficulties in Sewage System Renovation
Toilets and other sanitary fixtures need to be connected to sewage pipes with a diameter of 110mm, and the slope should be ≥2% to avoid blockages. If flat pipes are used for relocation or the floor is raised, insufficient slope may lead to poor drainage, bad odors, and even water backflow.

  2. Waterproofing Requirements
The new area needs to be re-waterproofed, with the waterproofing height not less than 1.8 meters and applied in 2 - 3 coats. Inadequate waterproofing can easily cause water leakage, damaging one's own decoration or affecting neighborly relations.

  3. Planning of Water Supply and Drainage Pipes
Unreasonable pipe routing may generate water flow noise, and improper sealing at the floor-penetrating points may cause condensation water to drip. It is necessary to reduce the impact through sound insulation materials and sealing treatments.

III. Compliant Renovation Plans

  1. Partial Expansion of the Original Bathroom
Without changing the main position, incorporate adjacent enclosed balconies or other areas with waterproofing capabilities into the bathroom, ensuring connection with the original sewage pipes and conducting a closed water test.
  2. Slight Relocation of the Toilet
If the relocation distance is ≤30cm, an eccentric relocator can be used, ensuring that the floor slope meets the drainage requirements and properly sealing the pipe joints and conducting waterproofing treatments.
