Bijie Container Modular Housing
Bijie container modular housing is a new type of building form that uses retired or idle containers as carriers and achieves convenient living through renovation. It has advantages such as fast construction speed, flexible space, convenient site selection, controllable cost, and environmental protection, but it also faces challenges such as rust prevention and sound insulation.

Core Advantages
- Fast Construction Speed: Traditional buildings require complex processes such as foundation treatment and main structure construction, while container houses have ready-made box structures as their main components. They only need reinforcement, thermal and sound insulation treatment, door and window installation, and interior decoration, significantly shortening the time from design to occupancy and enabling a rapid response to urgent housing needs.
- Flexible Space Organization: Standard containers are like building blocks and can be combined horizontally or vertically to create spaces of different areas and layouts. For example, a single 20-foot container can be transformed into a single apartment, two side-by-side containers can form a workspace, and stacking three layers can create a row of dormitories. A cultural and creative park in Bijie has created a composite space integrating studios, exhibition halls, and coffee bars by stacking a dozen containers in a staggered manner.
- Convenient Site Selection and Mobility: Container houses have simple foundation requirements and can be quickly deployed in areas with complex terrain. Their overall or modular transportation characteristics support the concept of "housing following people." For example, in the mountainous areas of Bijie, containers can be transported by trucks to remote villages and put into use within a few days after hoisting.
- Controllable Cost: The main materials are recycled or mass-produced boxes, with short construction periods and low labor consumption. The basic construction cost is about 30% lower than that of traditional buildings, and the construction period is shortened by two-thirds.
- Environmental Protection Characteristics: Recycling second-hand containers can save 3 tons of steel and reduce concrete usage. An ecological farm in Bijie has achieved sustainable living by retaining the original shipping numbers and rust marks of the containers, combining them with local materials for renovation, and incorporating rainwater collection systems and solar panels.
Adaptive Development
Bijie container modular housing has been innovatively applied in youth apartment projects on the outskirts of the city. Designers have combined 32 containers into a community through cantilevered balconies and aerial corridors, with a central public kitchen and laundry room, and a rooftop garden planted with local ferns, balancing functionality and ecology.
Challenges and Improvements
The foggy and humid climate in mountainous areas requires higher standards for rust prevention, with professional anti-corrosion coatings adding about 50 yuan per square meter in cost. Sound insulation needs to be improved by adding sound-absorbing materials, such as attaching a 2-centimeter-thick cork layer to the interior walls to effectively block rain noise.
