Beijing Housing Container Design
The design of housing containers in Beijing should be comprehensively considered from five aspects: compliance, space utilization, climate adaptation, safety details, and aesthetic integration.

1. Compliance Requirements According to the "Beijing Temporary Construction Project Management Measures," container houses must comply with site selection regulations, not occupying urban roads, green spaces, or permanent building red lines. The height must be ≤2.8 meters, and the area of a single container must be ≤15 square meters to avoid illegal construction. Prior approval from the local street or park management committee is required, along with proof of site use. If used for residential purposes, they must also meet the safety standards for temporary buildings outlined in the "Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings."
2. Space Utilization Optimization Most container houses in Beijing range from 10 to 20 square meters, necessitating modular design to enhance utilization.
- Compact Layout: A 10-square-meter single container can be designed as an integrated "sleeping + storage" space, with a 30 cm storage drawer under the bed and a foldable table mounted on the wall (60 cm wide when unfolded, 30 cm when folded) to save living room space.
- Multi-functional Assembly: When assembling two 20-square-meter containers, the front container can be divided into a bedroom and an open kitchen, while the rear container can house a bathroom area (featuring waterproof walls and a foldable toilet), with a glass partition in between to enhance ventilation and lighting.
- Embedded Design: The kitchen integrates a stove, sink, and storage cabinets to reduce space waste. Wall-mounted foldable tables and under-bed storage drawers increase functionality density.
3. Climate Adaptation Design Beijing experiences cold winters and hot summers, requiring enhanced thermal insulation.
- Walls: Use 10 cm thick rock wool sandwich panels (thermal conductivity ≤0.04 W/(m·K)), which warm up 2°C faster in winter than ordinary color steel plate houses.
- Roof and Ventilation: Install operable aluminum alloy skylights (with sunshades) and 30 cm × 50 cm ventilation openings on the side walls (equipped with insect screens). In summer, a combination of window opening and fans can reduce the perceived temperature by 3-5°C.
- Floor: Lay a 3 cm thick insulation layer + 2 cm anti-slip tiles to prevent cold floors in winter.
4. Safety Detail Assurance
- Fire Protection: Residential container houses must be equipped with ABC dry powder fire extinguishers at a rate of 1 per 10 square meters. Electrical circuits should use concealed wiring + flame-retardant pipes, with strict prohibition of unauthorized connections.
- Electricity: Design dual-circuit power supply (including emergency outlets), with a separate 16A circuit for the kitchen. High-power appliances like refrigerators and water heaters require independent switches.
- Doors and Windows: Install 5 mm tempered glass doors (with C-level locks) and windows with anti-theft chains to enhance security.
5. Aesthetic Integration with Surroundings
- Exterior Walls: Use off-white or light gray brick-patterned stone-like paint, or wood paneling + green plant walls, to harmonize with surrounding architectural styles.
- Roof: Add a 15 cm wide eave for sun and rain protection, with预留 (reserved) planting slots on the walls for climbing plants, which can reduce summer temperatures by 1-2°C.
- Identification: Print reflective strips or park-specific numbers on the side of the container to meet management requirements and enhance safety.
